Perna Stops 38 Shots as Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey Defeats No. 15 Albertus Magnus 3-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – For the second time in as many nights, the Wilkes University men's ice hockey team took down No. 15 Albertus Magnus by a score of 3-1. Cocchi, Harrington and Roginski all lit the lamp for the Colonels as Perna made 38 saves in the victory on Saturday at the Ralph Walker Rink.

The win elevated Wilkes' record to 2-1-0 while Albertus Magnus fell to 2-2-0 on the season.

The Colonels opened the scoring at 11:19 into the first period when Jimmy O'Kane (Chicago, IL/Notre Dame Prep) found himself on a two-on-one entering the Falcons' zone. He sent a backhand pass over to Max Cocchi (Ludlow, MA/), who snuck a shot under the left pad of the goaltender to give Wilkes a 1-0 lead. O'Kane picked up the lone assist on the goal.

Wilkes extended their lead while on the power play with under two minutes to go in the first frame. As the Colonels cycled the puck through the Falcon's zone, Daniel Nau (Wake Forest, NC) fired a well-disguised pass to Miles Harrington (McDonough, GA), who deflected the puck to the back of the net. Nau and Matt Carlson (Delmar, NY/) were both awarded assists on Harrington's first collegiate goal at 18:17

The 2-0 score would hold throughout the remainder of the period as Wilkes exited the ice with the momentum firmly behind them.

The Colonels headed back on the man advantage early on in the middle frame and trapped Albertus Magnus in their own zone with a flurry of good puck movement. After a scoring chance by Christian Blomquist (Wauwatosa, WI/) was blocked by a defender, Patrick Roginski (Shelby Twp., MI/) collected the loose biscuit and sent a laser of a shot past the blocker side of the Falcon's goalie. Blomquist was credited with an assist on Roginski's 3-0 marker at 5:45.

Colonels goaltender Jack Perna (Sykesville, MD/) was incredibly consistent throughout the first 40 minutes of play, stopping 11 shots in each period. His efforts kept Albertus Magnus off the board and allowed Wilkes to enter the second intermission in possession of a three-goal lead.

The Falcons found life at 11:39 into the third period while on the power play. After firing a shot that hit a teammate, Gustav Müller picked up his own rebound and wrapped the puck behind the net, tucking it inside the right goal post. Müller's first of the season made it a 3-1 contest.

Perna appeared unphased by the goal, making ten more saves in the final eight minutes of action to secure the 3-1 victory for Wilkes.

Harrington and Roginski shared the team lead in shots with four each. Both players, along with Cocchi, recorded goals on the evening. Cocchi went 10-15 on faceoffs while Cole Jungwirth (Bloomington, MN/) made three blocks. Perna made a career-high 38 saves in the Colonels' second victory over a ranked opponent this season.

Müller led all Albertus Magnus skaters with six shots on goal and picked up the lone goal for the Falcons. Tim Manning and Caden Pattison each sent four shots on goal as well. Carson Ironside turned aside 18 shots.

The Colonels are back in action next Friday when they travel to Manhattanville College to open up UCHC play against the Valiants. Puck drop is slated for 7:00 p.m.
