Wilkes Men's Swimming Defeats Goucher 98-43 with Six Individual Wins and Two Relay Wins

TOWSON, MD – On the strength of six individual race victories and a sweep of the two relays the Wilkes University men's swimming team defeated host Goucher College 98-43 Saturday afternoon at the von Borries Aquatic Center.

Wilkes improved its overall record to 4-2 this season with the victory over a Landmark Conference opponent.

To start the meet the Colonels 200 Medley Relay team of Ashton Dainty (Scranton, PA/Scranton), John Evans (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Holy Redeemer), Stephen Verosko (Gainesville, VA/Patriot), and Luke Donato (Westerly, RI/Westerly) swam a time of 1:49.84 to defeat the Gophers relay team and earn 11 team points.

Verosko then picked up the win in the first individual race of the dual meet by beating a Goucher swimmer in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 2:07.45 to earn nine points.

Dainty followed with a win over six swimmers in the 50 Freestyle with a time of 23.98. Owen Lewis (Ellicott City, MD/Howard) was second in his collegiate debut with a 24.75 and Donato took third in the race.

Mason McCoy (Essington, PA/Interboro) won the 200 IM with a time of 2:27.31 in a field of three as Evans took second.

Donato took first of five swimmers in the 100 Freestyle, clocking in at 54.81. His teammates Lewis and Kirkland Matlock (Carrollton, TX/Newman Smith) placed second and third.

McCoy won his second race of the day in the 500 Freestyle with a time of 5:55.40.

Evans capped the individual wins with a time of 2:43.90 in the 200 Breaststroke.

The team of McCoy, Lewis, Matlock, and Verosko were unchallenged in the final event, the 400 Freestyle Relay. The foursome swam a 4:00.74 to take the 11 points.

The Colonels return to the Wyoming Valley CYC next Saturday to host a tri-meet with Stevenson University and cross-town rival King's College at 1:00 p.m.
