Wilkes Women's Ice Hockey Closes Season Series Against Manhattanville with 3-2 Defeat
WILKES-BARRE – After falling in a close overtime decision a night prior, the Wilkes University women's ice hockey team closed out its season series with visiting Manattanville College falling in another tight United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) 3-2 in regulation Sunday afternoon at the Toyota SportsPlex.
Wilkes slipped to 2-2 overall on the season and 0-2 in UCHC play. Manhattanville improved to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in league contests,
The Valiants scored the lone goal of the first period when Harper Weisbeck found the back of the net off an assist from Annie Niedermier at the 14:25 mark of the frame.
Wilkes tied the game late in the second period as
Amanda Spreadbury (Suwanee, GA) notched her third goal of the season on the power play with assists from
Abigail Barcless (Hamilton, NJ/) and
Rachel Morey (Buffalo, WY/) on the man-advantage. The tie was short-lived as Manhattanville scored four minutes later in the period to take a 2-1 lead as Gabrielle Cox rang the bell unassisted with just six seconds on the clock.
The scored remained the same in the third until Wilkes pulled its goalie looking for the equalizer only to see Cox record her second of the game on the empty net tally with 1:31 left in the game.
The Colonels made one last push down two goals as Barcless scored off a pass from Morey with :35 remaining to pull to within one again. Manhattanville then survived the final seconds to preserve the season sweep and conference road victory.
Wilkes outshot Manhattanville 41-36. The Colonels also held a slight advantage in the face off circle garnering 28-of-53 draws.
Audrey Milne (London, ON) posted 33 saves in net for Wilkes while Franny Gerardi made 39 stops to record the win for Manhattanville.
Wilkes remains idle until the Colonels begin a season series at UCHC foe Utica University on Friday with puck drop scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
