Wilkes Women's Basketball Defeated by Delaware Valley 70-51
DOYLESTOWN, PA – The Wilkes women's basketball team were bested on the road Saturday afternoon, dropping a tough non-conference contest at Delaware Valley University 70-51.
With the loss the Colonels fall to 5-5 on the year, while the Aggies improve to 9-2.
Delaware Valley opened the game with a 13-3 run to take the early lead. A
Julianna Askins (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle) three-pointer sparked the Colonel offense late in the quarter as they halved the gap to five points with three minutes left in the quarter, down 15-10. Another run by the Aggies re-established the lead and gave them a 24-12 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
The Colonels started the second quarter hot, sinking the first three shots of the frame including a three from
Emma Stout (Bangor, PA/Bangor) to close the gap to 24-19. DelVal responded with a layup and a triple of their own to bring the gap back to double-digits but were out-scored by the Colonels for the remainder of the quarter 11-5. Askins added her second three-pointer of the half, the team's third, during the run as Wilkes went into the break only down two possessions, 34-30.
Two free-throws from
Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) opened the second half for the Colonels, but the offense was in a drought as DelVal went on an 11-0 run, extending their lead 45-32. A
Taylor Simpson (Dunmore, PA/Lawrenceville School) jump shot and another Askins trey gave the Colonels some life, but the Aggies cruised through the third quarter with a 50-38 lead heading into the fourth.
The Colonels fought hard in the final frame, scoring six of the game's last nine points, but couldn't keep up with Delaware Valley as they took the victory.
Askins' trio of triples helped her lead the Colonels in scoring with 12 points, followed by Matos with 10 who also had four steals on the day.
Madison Robel (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) led the team with seven rebounds and
Julia Marino (Washington Township, NJ/Washington Township) led with three assists.
Erin Shober (Reading, PA/Wilson) added four blocks, continuing her dominance at the top of the conference in that category.
Maisie Neuber led Delaware Valley with 21 points, while Ciana Feliciano led the team in rebounds and assists with nine and four respectively.
The Colonels take the court next on Saturday, December 30 as they welcome Alvernia University to the Marts Center at 1:00 p.m.
