Wilkes Men's Volleyball Moves to 11-3 with Sweep at Wilson
CHAMBERSBURG, PA – The Wilkes University men's volleyball team earned a program record 11th victory of the season Thursday night at Gannett Field House against host Wilson College in non-conference competition.
Wilkes improved to 11-3 overall and are 5-1 in road matches this season. Wilson dropped to 1-4 overall.
Lucas Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) led the Colonels with 11 kills and added seven digs as
Zach Shay (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) had 22 assists and eight digs.
The first set saw the score tie 10-10 before the Colonels used a strong 9-1 run to go ahead 19-11.
Noah Taylor (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional) had an ace and a kill during the run while
Paul Binner (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock) had a kill and a block. Wilkes was able to hold off a late 5-0 run by the Phoenix and score three of the last four points including the final point on a kill by
Jacob Haller (Birdsboro, PA/Exeter Township) to win 25-18.
Wilson opened a 7-2 lead in the second set and led 11-8 before a five-point run put the Colonels ahead 13-11. Mages, Haller, and
Matthew Molnar (South Abington Township, PA/Abington Heights) each had a kill and Shay added an ace during the run. In total the Colonels turned that run into a 12-2 run to take a commanding 20-13 lead. Mages put away the final kill to win the second set 25-21.
Wilkes led throughout in the third set with a three-point run to extend a 15-13 lead to 18-13 being the key moment. Mages ended the match with the final kill of the night as the Colonels won 25-19 to complete the sweep.
Following Mages' 11 kills was Binner with six as he also added three blocks. Taylor had four kills, four aces, and four digs.
Xavier Webber led Wilson with eight kills. Jonathan Minnick had 17 assists.
The Colonels hit a strong .284 in the match and held Wilson to a .080 hitting percentage. Wilkes led in kills, aces, blocks, assists, and digs.
Wilkes faces a tough test in Middle Atlantic Conference play at No. 7 Messiah University on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
