Wilkes Women's Ice Hockey Concludes Season on Senior Day

WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University women's ice hockey team concluded its 2022-23 season on Senior Day at the Toyota SportsPlex as the Colonels lost 3-2 in a penalty-filled game to Lebanon Valley College in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) contest.

Wilkes ended its season with a 4-19-2 overall record and at 4-14-2 in the UCHC. Wilkes had a 2-6-2 record in its final season of MAC competition. LVC improved to 12-12-1 overall, 9-10-1 in the UCHC, and to 7-2-1 in the MAC to conclude the regular season.

Katrina Strauts gave the Dutchmen the lead with a power play goal at the 10:56 mark of the first period. A lead that would hold to the intermission. Emma Swansburg (Shelburne, NS/Shelburne Regional) made 16 saves in the first period for Wilkes as Lebanon Valley held a 17-6 shots on goal advantage.

Senior Abigail Barcless (Hamilton, NJ) tied the game 43 seconds into the second with a power play goal with assists coming from fellow seniors Julie Patterson (Trenton, NJ/) and Abby Miller (Webster, NY/). Wilkes struck again on the power play 6:58 into the second as Rachel Morey (Buffalo, WY/) put the puck in the net off a scramble in front of the LVC goal after a shot by Barcless was initially saved. Bella Kaczorowski (Anchorage, AK) and Barcless were credited with assists on the play that put Wilkes up 2-1.

Swansburg stopped all 17 shots she faced in the second period to keep the Colonels ahead by one.

Brenna Mulcahy was able to coral a rebound behind the net and wrap around for the tying goal 5:23 into the third. The Colonels were penalized with their 10th minor penalty of the game with 2:29 remaining and Lebanon Valley scored the winning goal off the stick of Katie Pounder with 1:23 left.

Swansburg made six saves in the third for 39 total in the game. Olivia Magneson stopped all eight shots she faced in the third period by Wilkes and had 22 saves in the game as she picked up the win.

Wilkes won the faceoff battle 33-32 as Morey was 20-for-36. Elizabeth Spoon (Arlington, TX) won 4-of-6 and Kaczorowski was 8-of-22. Pounder led LVC at the dot going 16-for-24.

Barcless, Patterson, Morey, Emma Bresett (Davidson, NC), and Abigail Davis (Mountain Top, PA) all had four shots on goal to lead Wilkes. Savanna Maxon (Anchorage, AK) had six blocked shots. Pounder had a game-high six shots on goal for LVC and Grace Mayer had four blocked shots.

Each team was 2-for-8 on the power play.

After the game Wilkes recognized its six seniors, Barcless, Patterson, Miller, Davis, Quinn Rodefeld (Blaine, MN/), and Gianna Manzi (Aston, PA).
