Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey's Season Comes to an End at Manhattanville
RYE, N.Y. – The Wilkes University men's ice hockey team fell 4-1 to the Manhattanville College Valiants in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) Quarterfinals on Wednesday night.
The Colonels, who were the fifth seed, end the season with an overall record of 13-10-3. The Valiants move on to the UCHC semifinals as the No. 4 seed with an overall record of 14-10-2.
The first period was fast paced yet scoreless for both teams. The Valiants outshot the Colonels 22-13 in the period.
Jimmy O'Kane (Chicago, IL/Notre Dame Prep),
Christian Blomquist (Wauwatosa, WI),
Ryan Galvin (Atlanta, GA), and
Phil Erickson (Eau Claire, WI) each had two shots in the period for Wilkes. Five other Colonels had one shot in the period. Goaltender
Garrett Nieto (Yorba Linda, CA) earned seven saves in the first period.
The Valiants had a total of 22 shots in the first period, and goaltender Sebastian Woods earned five saves.
About seven minutes into the second period Manhattanville was able to put one away, leading Wilkes 1-0 at the end of the period. The Colonels were able to get 11 shots off in the period led by Erickson and
Ben Stefanini (Framingham, MA) with three, followed by
Cam Lowe (Lancaster, MA) with two. Nieto added 12 saves in the second period.
Manhattanville had 22 shots in the second period and Woods earned five saves.
The Valiants struck early in the third period, scoring only 17 seconds in. Down by two goals, the Colonels were not ready to give up as Blomquist put one away 4:30 into the period. About nine minutes into the period,
Michael Paterson-Jones (Baldwinsville, NY) took over as goaltender for Wilkes. Manhattanville was able to score two more goals in the period, one of them on an empty net. The Colonels outshot the Valiants in the third period 29-14.
Joe Johnson (Midland, MI) led Wilkes in shots in the period with four. Nieto had two saves in the period and Paterson-Jones had four.
The Valiants had 14 shots in the third period and Woods had 13 saves.
Wilkes was 29-59 in faceoffs with O'Kane winning 10,
Matt Carlson (Delmar, NY) winning nine, and
Billy Berry (Redding, CT) and
Max Cocchi (Ludlow, MA) each winning five. Manhattanville was 30-59 in faceoffs.
The Colonels had a total of 24 shots on goal led by O'Kane with six followed by Johnson with three and were 0-3 on power-plays. The Valiants had 29 shots on goal and were 0-1 on power-plays.
The Wilkes men's ice hockey team's season comes to a close, finishing second in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) and fifth in the UCHC.
