Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey Splits Weekend Series with RV Nazareth
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Wilkes men's ice hockey team's eight game win streak was broken by the Nazareth Golden Flyers with a 6-3 final score in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) play on Saturday evening.
Wilkes moves to 11-8-1 overall and 9-6-0 in UCHC play. Nazareth improves to 12-7-2 on the season and 10-5-1 in conference play.
In the first period, both teams got out to an early start. Nazareth scored first at 3:57 into the period, and Wilkes answered back about a minute later at 5:14 with a goal from
Billy Berry (Redding, CT). The Golden Flyers were able to net another one before the end of the period at 12:45, leading the Colonels 2-1 at the end of the first. Wilkes had nine shots in the first period with
Ben Stefanini (Framingham, MA) leading with two, and seven other Colonels got a shot off. Goalkeeper
Michael Paterson-Jones (Baldwinsville, NY) tallied four saves in the period.
Nazareth had six shots in the period and goalkeeper Raphael Provencher had eight saves.
The second period almost went scoreless, but with 29 seconds left in the period Nazareth was able to score, leading Wilkes 3-1 into the third. The Colonels had eight shots in the period.
Scott Mueller (Nashville, TN) and Stafanini each had two shots in the period for Wilkes. Paterson-Jones added seven saves.
The Golden Flyers had eight shots in the second period and Provencher added eight saves.
Wilkes was able to notch two in the third period with goals from
Patrick Roginski (ShelbyTwp, MI) and
Phil Erickson (Eau Claire, WI), but Nazareth was able to net three, securing their 6-3 win over Wilkes. The Colonels had 16 shots in the period, led by
Matt Carlson (Delmar, NY) who had five. He was followed by Berry and
Joe Johnson (Midland, MI) who each had two. Paterson-Jones added 10 saves in the period.
Nazareth had 13 shots in the third period, and Provencher added 14 saves in the period.
The Colonels had a total of 33 shots in the game. Carlson had the most shots in the game for Wilkes with six. He was followed by Stefanini with five.
Jimmy O'Kane (Chicago, IL/Notre Dame Prep) and
Steven Spetz (Oak Ridge, NJ) each earned an assist in the game. The Golden Flyers had a total of 27 shots in the game. Wilkes did not have any power-play opportunities, as Nazareth did not receive any penalties. Nazareth went 1-4 in power-plays.
Wilkes won 28 of 66 faceoffs, with Carlson winning nine, Berry winning seven,
Max Cocchi (Ludlow, MA) winning six, O'Kane winning five, and
Cam Lowe (Lancaster, MA) winning one. Nazareth won 38 of 66 faceoffs.
Paterson-Jones had a total of 21 saves in the game for the Colonels. Provencher had a total of 30 saves for the Golden Flyers.
The Wilkes men's ice hockey team returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Pittston, Pa. to take on the King's College Monarchs at 8:15 p.m. for UCHC play.
