Wilkes Women's Ice Hockey Closes out Series with Worcester State
WILKES-BARRE – Visiting Worcester State University scored three goals in the second period on way to a 4-1 victory over the Wilkes University women's ice hockey team on Saturday afternoon at the Toyota SportsPlex.
Wilkes dropped to 4-15-2 overall while Worcester State improved to 14-6-1 overall on the season.
Worcester used a power-play 7:05 into the first period to take a 1-0 lead when Cassidhe Wozniak found the back of the net . Wilkes had it best chance late in the period when
Emma Guzdek's (Amherst, NY/) shot from right in front of the crease was saved to keep the visiting Lancers ahead by one at the end of the first.
The Colonels found the equalizer in the second period when
Anneke Bouma (Newcastle, ON) scored at the 5:49 mark thanks to assists from Guzdek and
Abigail Davis (Mountain Top, PA).
From there Worcester scored three unanswered goals including two on the power-play at 14:47 and 16:30 respectively to take a 4-1 advantage into the third period.
Worcester outshot Wilkes 61-45 including 38-33 in shots on goal.
Emma Swansburg (Shelburne, NS/Shelburne Regional) finished with 34 saves in net for Wilkes. Kelsey Czerniawski made 31 stops in the victory for Worcester.
The Colonels return to United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) play on Saturday when they welcome Utica University for a 3:30 p.m. matchup at the Toyota SportsPlex.
