Wilkes Baseball Falls 7-4 to Lycoming in MAC Freedom Action
EDWARDSVILLE – Visiting Lycoming College used five Colonel errors and six unearned runs to defeat the Wilkes University baseball team 7-4 Tuesday in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom action at Bruggeworth Field.
Wilkes is now 10-12 overall and 4-6 in the MAC Freedom. Lycoming improved to 4-12 overall and 2-6 in the conference.
Lycoming scored four unearned runs in the top of the third to gain the lead. The four runs came on three hits and two Wilkes errors including a solo home run by Greg Wirin.
The Warriors added one run in the fifth on one hit and two errors. Lycoming scored another unearned run, their sixth of the game, in the top of the sixth on one hit and one error. Jake Schilling homered down the left field line to lead off the top of the seventh to make it 7-0.
Wilkes got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth when
Adam Grundt (Archbald, PA/Valley View) singled to second base and then scored on a two-out triple by
Zack Luksic (Shavertown, PA/Dallas).
Darren Kerdesky (Dallas, PA/Dallas) then singled to center to bring in Luksic to make it 7-2 but was out at second trying to stretch it to a double.
The Colonels tried to rally in the ninth as
Mike Show (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) singled off the pitcher and then
Max Alessi (Wallenpaupack, PA/Wallenpaupack) bombed his second home run of the season to make it 7-4. The one-out home run was followed by a fly out, walk, and strikeout to end the game.
Colby Butczynski (Nanticoke, PA/Greater Nanticoke) (0-3) started for Wilkes and took the loss as he went three innings allowing four runs (zero earned) on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Braydon Wuestner (Gales Ferry, CT/Ledyard) went the next three innings allowing two runs (zero earned) on three hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Ryan Sanderson (West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) pitched the final three innings allowing one run on two hits with four strikeouts.
Zac Zaller (1-1) earned the win as he started and went five scoreless innings allowing just one hit and one walk with five strikeouts. Nick Reeder pitched the next three innings allowing two runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Schilling pitched the ninth, allowing two runs on two hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
Luksic went 2-for-2 with an RBI off the bench while Alessi was 2-for-4 with the home run and two RBI's. Kerdesky was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
The Colonels return to action on Friday hosting Misericordia University in MAC Freedom play at Bruggeworth Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. The Colonels finish their series with Lycoming next Tuesday with a doubleheader in Williamsport, Pa.
