Lawall and Show Edge Wilkes Baseball Past Norwich in Game Two to Earn Split
FORT PIERCE, FL – The Wilkes University baseball team concluded its Spring Break Trip with a doubleheader split against Norwich University Wednesday. The Cadets won game one 5-3 before the Colonels answered back in game two with a 3-1 victory in eight innings behind strong pitching from
Hunter Lawall (West Wyoming, PA/Wyoming Area) and
Mike Show (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights).
Wilkes is 5-4 overall following the split and went 4-3 on the trip to Florida. Norwich is 4-6 overall after splitting the twinbill.
Lawall made his first collegiate start in game two and did not allow a hit until the sixth inning.
The Colonels got on the board in the top of the third inning as Show singled on a ball hit to the pitcher and advanced to second on an error.
Connor Morgan (Dallas, PA/Lake Lehman) then singled through the left side to move Show to third.
Darren Kerdesky (Dallas, PA/Dallas) brought Show home with a sacrifice fly to left field as Wilkes went ahead 1-0.
That score held until the bottom of the seventh when the Cadets were able to scratch across a run on a hit by pitch, ground out and a two-out single. Lawall struck out his ninth batter of the game to send the game to extra innings.
Show doubled to begin the top of the eighth and then Morgan reached on an error by the pitcher as he was laying down a sacrifice bunt. The error allowed Show to score and Morgan to go all the way to third.
AJ Brosious (Laurys Station, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Morgan and make it 3-1.
Show then moved from his left field position to pitch the bottom of the eighth. Norwich loaded the bases before Show stuck out his second batter of the inning for the final out as he earned his second save in as many days.
Lawall (2-0) went 7.0 innings allowing just one run on two hits with no walks and nine strikeouts.
Todd Kolbicka (Hanover Twp., PA/Hanover) was 3-for-3 in the game and Show was 2-for-4 with two runs. Kerdesky and Brosious had one RBI each.
Jordan Talbot (0-2) pitched 8.0 innings for Norwich allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits and 10 strikeouts.
In game one Wilkes took a 1-0 lead when Show brought in
Jimmy Brazofsky (Park Ridge, NJ/Park Ridge), who had singled, with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second inning.
The Cadets tied the game in the top of the third with an unearned run.
Kerdesky was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the third and then stole second and third. He scored on a single by Brazofsky to right field to put Wilkes up 2-1.
That lead held until the top of the sixth when Norwich took the lead with four runs on three hits and two errors.
Show answered with an inside the park home run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 5-3 but Wilkes was unable to take advantage of three walks in the bottom of the seventh and the bases loaded situation.
Griffin Coyne (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) (0-1) made his first collegiate start as he went 5.1 innings allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits with no walks and six strikeouts.
Tyler Hoedl (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Holy Redeemer) pitched the final 1.2 innings allowing one run (zero earned) on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Brazofsky was 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI while Show was 1-for-3 with one run and two RBI's.
Ryan Miller (2-0) pitched 5.2 innings for Norwich allowing three runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Will Fowler earned his second save of the season going 1.1 innings without allowing a run or hit with three walks and two strikeouts.
Wilkes will return north and host DeSales University for a doubleheader at Bruggeworth Field on Saturday to open its final season of Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
