Wilkes Softball Splits Pair of Games on Final Day of Spring Break Trip; Colonels Finish 6-2 on Trip
MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The Wilkes University softball team concluded its spring break trip splitting a pair of games Thursday afternoon as the Colonels posted a 12-5 victory over Thiel College before falling 5-0 against Immaculata University in the night cap.
Wilkes rallied off six straight wins following the victory over Thiel, finishing the trip with a 6-2 overall mark.
Thiel took a 1-0 lead after its first at-bats before
Hannah Boyd (Escalon, CA/Escalon) tied the game in the bottom half of the inning singling home
Hope Mullins (Midland, VA/Liberty).
Thiel then scored four runs in the top of the third to take a 5-1 advantage before the Colonels answered back again plating three in the bottom of the frame.
Marissa Pick's (Watsontown, PA/Warrior Run) RBI single to right field highlighted the three-run inning.
Wilkes stormed all the way back in the fourth notching six runs to take a 10-4 lead. Pick and Boyd were at it again both connecting on RBI singles while
Hana Cross (South Brunswick, NJ/South Brunswick) triple home Boyd and Pick to clear the bases.
Wilkes added on two more insurance runs in the fifth and sixth to seal the 12-5 victory and push its win streak to six games.
Lauren DeMarco (Merrick, NY/Sanford H. Calhoun) recorded her third win of the season in the circle going the final four innings not allowing a run while scattering two hits.
The Colonels bats cooled off against Immaculata with only five hits through the seven innings of play.
Wilkes had runners in scoring positions several times throughout, but hard hit balls found their way to Immaculata gloves to end the hopes of a comeback attempt.
Emily Murphy (Philadelphia, PA/St. Hubert Catholic) suffered the loss in the circle pitching two innings allowing three runs on three hits.
Wilkes opens MAC Freedom play Saturday, March 18 when the Colonels travel to Arcadia University for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. in Glenside, Pa.
