Wilkes Softball Drops MAC Freedom Doubleheader to Misericordia
DALLAS, PA – The Wilkes University softball team would go on the road to Dallas, Pa. where they would fall to Misericordia University in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) doubleheader in Sunday afternoon action.
Wilkes would fall to 17-9 overall and 3-5 in the MAC Freedom. Misericordia would push their record up as they improved to 17-7 overall 7-1 in the league.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth the Cougars scored two runs with two outs using a single and two doubles. With two outs in the fifth Misericordia added a run on a double and a single to make it 3-0.
Hope Mullins (Midland, VA/Liberty) (2-4) took the loss in game one as she pitched the first 4.0 innings allowing two runs on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Sami Hendershott (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) pitched the next 2.0 innings allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts.
Alexa McHugh (8-2) earned the win for Misericordia in game one as she pitched all 7.0 innings allowing just two hits with five strikeouts in the shutout.
Hannah Boyd (Escalon, CA/Escalon) went 2-for-3 for the Colonels in game one.
The Cougars took the lead in the bottom of the first of game two with two walks and a single to lead 2-0. Misericordia added a run on a solo home run by Gianna Foreman in the top of the third inning. The Cougars would add one run in the bottom of the fifth as Nicole Elliot would get to home plate as Kaitlin Redling was caught stealing to make it 4-0.
The Colonels would get on the board in the top of the seventh. With one out in the inning with Nicole O'Rourke (Staten Island, NY/Susan E Wagner) on second and Megan Marshall (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) on first, Salma Lampack-Heverly (Quakertown, PA/Faith Christian Academy) would single to right field to bring O'Rourke home to make it 4-1 for Wilkes. Even with runners still on first and second, an out at second by the shortstop and a fly out to center field would finish the second game with a 4-1 Misericordia victory.
Lauren DeMarco (Merrick, NY/Sanford H. Calhoun) (7-2) would take the loss in the second game, pitching all six innings for the Colonels as she allowed eight hits and four runs on the day with two walks and two strikeouts.
Emily Wenner (5-2) earned the win for the Cougars as she pitched all seven innings for Misericordia. She would allow one run on seven hits, walking two batters and striking out two Colonels in the second game.
O'Rouke would go 1-for-3 in the second game with a run while Haylee Calaman (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown Area) went 2-for-4 at bat.
The Colonels continue MAC Freedom play at Lycoming College on Wednesday for a doubleheader in Williamsport, Pa. starting at 3:00 p.m.
