Wilkes Men's Tennis Picks Up Their First MAC Freedom Win of the Season Against Misericordia
EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University men's tennis team picked up their first Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) win of the season 8-1 against the Misericordia University Cougars on Tuesday afternoon.
The Colonels move to 1-8 on the season and 1-5 in conference. The Cougars fall to 1-9 overall and 0-4 in the MAC Freedom.
Wilkes earned a clean sweep in the doubles, claiming all three matches. The team of
Connor Frey (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) and
Nathanial Rathe (Lincoln, NE/Lincoln Southeast) were up first, winning their match 8-3. Then came the team of
Donovan Zong (Bethlehem, PA/Salisbury Township) and
Jonah Nguyen (Enola, PA/East Pennsboro Area) claiming their match 8-6. To finish out the doubles, the team of
Drew Fiedler (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) and
Ian Williams (West Wyoming, PA/Wyoming Area) claimed their match 8-6.
The Colonels took all but one of the singles matches. Rathe was up first in the No. 1 slot and claimed his sets 6-4 and 6-3. Frey followed in the No. 2 slot earning 6-4 and 6-3 set wins as well. Nguyen won the next singles match for Wilkes in the No.3 slot taking the first set 6-4 and the second set 6-2.
Zong came through in the No. 4 slot, winning his match 8-0 and Fiedler finished out the 7-1 victory winning his match 8-2 in the No. 6 slot.
The Wilkes men's tennis team finishes their MAC Freedom play on Saturday when they travel to Madison, N.J. to take on FDU-Florham at 9:00 a.m.
