Keystone Gets Non-Conference Win Over Wilkes Baseball
LA PLUMA, PA – The Wilkes University baseball competed in a non-conference game where they would fall to Keystone College 17-3 in Monday afternoon action at Christy Mathewson Field.
The Colonels will drop to 14-22 on the year while the Giants improve their record to 20-11.
Keystone would begin to get out to a lead through the early innings, as they would score a run with a hit and an error in the second inning. They would add three runs on three hits in the third and one run on two hits in the fourth inning to get ahead 5-0.
Wilkes would get two runs in the sixth inning as Jason Spezzaferra (Maywood, NJ/Hackensack) would get on first as he singled to right field. With two outs, Spezzaferra advanced on a wild pitch and Darren Kerdesky (Dallas, PA/Dallas) walked to get two Colonels on base. Mike Show (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) was hit by pitch to load the bases. Zack Luksic (Shavertown, PA/Dallas) would reach first on a fielding error, getting Show to second and allowing Spezzaferra and Kerdesky time to make it to home plate and cut the Giants lead to 5-2. Keystone would respond in the bottom of the sixth with an eight-run inning on seven hits and an error to extend their lead 13-2.
The Giants would tack on four runs in the seventh inning on three hits. Braydon Wuestner (Gales Ferry, CT/Ledyard) would hit a home run in the top of the ninth inning and Wilkes would have a runner on first and third, but Keystone would get the last out on second base and secure a 17-3 victory over the Colonels.
Hunter Lawall (West Wyoming, PA/Wyoming Area) (3-1) would suffer his first loss on the season as he gave up five runs on six hits in four innings pitched while striking out four batters. Ryan Sanderson (West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) would pitch two innings, giving up eight runs on eight hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Tyler Hoedl (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Holy Redeemer) would pitch one inning, allowing four runs on three hits with two walks on the day. Sawyer Kemp (Nescopeck, PA/Berwick) would finish the pitching for Wilkes, striking out all three batters he faced.
Griffin Yastremski (3-0) would get the win and stay undefeated as he pitched nearly six innings, as he went 5.2 innings, giving up two runs on two hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Greg Verano would pitch 1.1 innings, only allowing one hit and one walk on the day. Jacob Shaw would pitch one inning as he gave up a hit and had a strikeout, while Kevin Adamson would finish the pitching for the Giants with one run on three hits as he struck out two Colonels at bat.
Spezzaferra and Wuestner would both be 1-1 at bat with a run, with Wuestner hitting a home run on the day, while Kerdesky made it to home plate once as well.
Wilkes will have a quick turnaround as they will travel to Scranton tomorrow to take on the University of Scranton in non-conference competition that begins at 5:00 p.m.
