Third Seeded Wilkes Women's Tennis Upended by No. 2 Misericordia in MAC Freedom Semifinal
DALLAS, PA – The Wilkes University women's tennis team, seeded third, dropped a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) Semifinal match 5-0 to host and No. 2 seed Misericordia University Thursday afternoon.
Wilkes finished its season with a 6-7 overall record. Misericordia moved to the MAC Freedom Final at top seed Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday with the victory and are 13-6 overall.
The Cougars won all three doubles flights to jump out to a 3-0 lead. With Brianna Pizzano and Emily Brecker winning 8-0 at No. 1 doubles over
Kaitlyn O'Neil (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe) and
Tea Amerise (Mountain Top, PA/Holy Redeemer). Lydia Barbour and Erin Cridge won 8-4 over
Cassidy Greenman (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) and
Sydney Farmer (Lacey Township, NJ/Lacey Township) at No. 2 doubles. The team of
Zoe Klein (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) and
Karlee Yuscavage (Hanover Twp., PA/Hanover Area) lost in the tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles 8-7 (7-2) to Hailey Loughlin and Cassie Benderavich.
Loughlin defeated O'Neil 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles and Cridge won 6-1, 6-0 over Farmer at No. 5 singles to clinch the match 5-0 for Misericordia.
Amerise led 6-3, 3-1 at No. 2 singles over Brecker at the time the match was stopped. Klein was up a set, winning 6-2 and trailed 3-1 in the second set at No. 3 singles against Barbour when the match was stopped. Greenman at No. 1 singles and Yuscavage at No. 6 singles trailed by a set to Pizzano and Lauren Visalli respectively.
The loss ends the Colonels competition in the MAC Freedom, a conference they won 14-consecutive championships in from 2007-2021. Wilkes will move into the Landmark Conference starting next season.
