Cobham Scores Five in Wilkes Women's Lacrosse Loss Against King's in MAC Freedom Finale
EDWARDSVILLE –
Maleah Cobham (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke) scored five goals leading a furious Wilkes University second half comeback but the Colonels were unable to climb all the way back falling 11-10 against cross-town rival King's College in both teams Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom finale Saturday afternoon at Schmidt Stadium.
Wilkes concluded its season with a 3-14 overall record and 0-8 in league games while King's finished 3-13 and 2-6 in conference contests.
King's notched the first two goals of the game midway through the first quarter before Cobham cut the lead in half at 2-1 scoring her 17
th goal of the season with 4:51 left in the frame.
King's built its advantage back with two straight goals to end the quarter as the Monarch led 4-1 after one.
After King's added its fifth tally of the game, Wilkes responded when
Breanne Fulling (Hyde Park, NY/Franklin D. Roosevelt) deposited a free position shot for her 25
th goal of the season as the Colonels trailed 5-2 with 12:03 left in the half. King's went back on the offensive again scoring four unanswered goals over the final 12 minutes to push its lead to 9-2 at the break.
Wilkes began its comeback attempt in the third quarter outscoring the Monarchs 4-2 in the frame. Two goals from
Alexis Guttilla (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by-the-Sea) and one each from Cobham and
Abby Miller (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) brought the Colonels to within five trailing 11-6 after three quarters.
The scoring continued for Wilkes in the fourth quarter as Cobham scored back-to-back and
Brooklyn Pedana (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) notched her 17
th strike of the year to bring Wilkes to within two at 11-9 with 5:36 left in the game.
Cobham broke free for her fifth of the game with :38 remaining pulling Wilkes to within one setting up an important draw control. King's would control the ball and run out the final seconds of the game to secure the road conference victory.
Wilkes held a 39-21 shot advantage including 33 on goal. The Colonels also did a fine job clearing the ball finishing 15-for-19.
Samantha Scott (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) finished with six saves in the defeat for Wilkes. Jessie Smalley entered in relief for King's playing all but 2:15 in goal making 20 saves to record the win.
