Wilkes Baseball Splits MAC Freedom Doubleheader with Delaware Valley
EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University baseball team picked up a 4-1 win in game one but lost game two 2-0 in eight innings as the Colonels split their Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Bruggeworth Field.
Wilkes now stands at 13-16 overall and 7-10 in the MAC Freedom. Delaware Valley is 9-15 overall and 4-10 in the league following the series win as the Aggies won Friday's game in Doylestown, Pa.
Darren Kerdesky (Dallas, PA/Dallas) tripled over the left fielder's head to bring in
Evan Melberger (West Pittston, PA/Wyoming Area), who had reached on a fielder's choice, as the Colonels took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first of game one.
The Aggies tied the game in the top of the third with a one-out triple to right center and an RBI groundout.
Wilkes took the lead back in the bottom of the fourth as Kerdesky reached with a leadoff hit by pitch. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Mike Show (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) and moved ahead to third on a wild pitch.
Ryan Johnston (Garden City, NY/Chaminade) brought Kerdesky in with an RBI groundout to second base as the Colonels went ahead 2-1.
Ryan Johnston (Garden City, NY/Chaminade) added to the Colonels lead in the bottom of the sixth as he hit his second home run of the season, a two-run blast to left that brought in Show who had walked.
Aiden Murphy (Mountain Top, PA/Wyoming Seminary) (3-2) was strong in his third complete game of the season as he struck out 10 allowing one run on four hits with three walks.
Ethan Saxe (1-3) went 5.1 innings allowing four runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts in the loss. John Slover recorded the final two outs of the sixth inning without allowing a baserunner.
Todd Kolbicka (Hanover Twp., PA/Hanover) went 2-for-3 in game one while Johnston was 1-for-3 with three RBI's.
In game two the game went scoreless through seven innings and into extras. In the top of the eighth Delaware Valley struck for two runs, using two singles, a sacrifice fly, and a double to take the lead.
Show and pinch hitter
Max Alessi (Wallenpaupack, PA/Wallenpaupack) worked walks to start the bottom of the eighth as DelVal made a pitching change. After two strikeouts pinch hitter
Connor Morgan (Dallas, PA/Lake Lehman) struck out but reached first on a wild pitch to load the bases. The Aggies got their fourth strikeout of the inning on the next batter to seal the 2-0 extra inning win.
Tony Molitoris (Hanover Twp., PA/Holy Redeemer) took a no decision as he went the first seven innings scoreless allowing just one hit and one walk in a stellar start. He struck out seven Aggies. Show (1-1) took the loss as he pitched 1.0 innings allowing two runs on three hits and one walk.
Derek Cannon pitched the first six-plus innings for DelVal scoreless. He allowed seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Orion Frailey (2-2) went one-plus innings allowing two walks with one strikeout to earn the win. Connor Esbenshade entered to earn his first save with four strikeouts.
Show was 2-for-3 at the plate while Kolbicka was 2-for-4. Wilkes left 11 runners on base in the game.
The Colonels host William Paterson University in a non-conference game Tuesday at Bruggeworth Field with first pitch slated for 3:45 p.m.
