After Strong Second Half, Wilkes Field Hockey Tops Neumann in Overtime 2-1

ASTON, PA – 60 minutes wasn't enough this afternoon as the Wilkes University field hockey team would take Neumann University to overtime before winning the non-conference game by a score of 2-1.

With the win, Wilkes remained perfect on the road and advanced their record to 3-1. Neumann fell to 1-4 on the season.

The Wilkes offense opened the game with sustained pressure in the offensive zone. Despite setting up a 3-on-1 situation against a Neumann defender and taking two penalty corners, the Colonels were unable to capitalize early.

That changed at 7:08 into the first quarter when Morgan Hermanofski (Shickshinny, PA/Northwest Area) picked up a pass from Caitlin Keim (Trevorton, PA/Line Mountain) in transition and found herself alone against the goaltender. Hermanofski scored her fourth goal of the season, giving Wilkes a 1-0 lead.

The Knights found some momentum on offense and evened up the score at 3:16 in the second quarter. After Carly Eidle (East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen) made a save, Natalie Zoffer collected the rebound and put it in the back of the net to make it a 1-1 game.

Both teams managed to stifle each other's attacks for the remainder of the quarter as they entered halftime knotted at one.

The third quarter continued the trend of defensive play as both teams interrupted several shots and passes to keep the score 1-1.

Wilkes opened the final frame with a quick rush into the shooter's circle, drawing a corner along the way. Although the Colonels were unable to score on the ensuing rush, they were able to pin Neumann's defense in their own zone for roughly six consecutive minutes of play. During this ferocious period of pressure, Kellie Scott (Northport, ME/Kents Hill) and Anmarie Lebron (Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) combined for four shots on goal.

The vast majority of fourth quarter play was contained to Neumann's defensive zone as the Colonels continued to block clearing attempts from the Knights defense  and pepper the net with shots.

Neumann was able to weather the storm in large part thanks to the play of their goalie, Lindsey Naulty, who made seven saves in the final 15 minutes and forced the game into overtime.

Play opened up in the first period of overtime with both teams jockeying for possession. Just under five minutes into play, Hermanofski rushed towards the goal and drew a corner, giving the Colonels an opportunity to end the game. On the corner attempt, Bridget Rosenfeld (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) played the ball to Hermanofski in front of the net, who scored her fifth of the season and second of the game to give Wilkes the 2-1 victory.

Hermanofski led all Colonels with four shots on goal, followed by Morgan Millard (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg Area), Scott and LeBron who both had two. Keim and Rosenfeld both picked up an assist, while Eidle recorded one save in the team's victory.

For Neumann, Zoffer and Elle Smith both tallied a shot on goal and Naulty made nine saves for the Knights.

Wilkes remains on the road Thursday when they travel to Misericordia University for a 7:00 p.m. game.
