Wilkes Field Hockey Blanks Goucher 2-0 in First Landmark Conference Game
BALTIMORE, MD – The Wilkes University field hockey team scored a pair of second-half goals in their road game against Goucher College to win the university's first-ever contest in the Landmark Conference 2-0.
With the victory, Wilkes improved their overall record to 4-2 and kicked off their first season of Landmark play at a perfect 1-0.
The Colonels opened the game with five unanswered shots in the first quarter, but were unable to beat the Gopher's goalie, Katie Bloom. Wilkes applied pressure at the end of the first, leading to a penalty corner taken by
Bridget Rosenfeld (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) with under a minute remaining. The Colonels were unable to capitalize and headed into the second quarter tied 0-0.
Wilkes dominated play in the second, trapping Goucher in their own zone and forcing Bloom to turn away two more shots. The Colonels took seven penalty corners in the quarter but still couldn't take the lead. Wilkes was successful at keeping play away from their goaltender,
Carly Eidle (East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen), who did not face a shot on goal in the first 30 minutes. As both teams entered halftime, the game remained scoreless.
The Colonels came out of the break firing on all cylinders. Just two minutes into the third quarter,
Caitlin Keim (Trevorton, PA/Line Mountain) fired a shot on Bloom, who made the save but left a rebound up for grabs.
Bridget Rosenfeld (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) collected the ball and sent it to the back of the net. Rosenfeld's second goal of the season gave Wilkes a 1-0 lead at 2:15 into the quarter.
Wilkes continued to contain play to Goucher's defensive zone, sending three more shots in on Bloom and only giving up one penalty corner. As both teams entered the final frame of play, Eidle still had yet to face a shot.
Goucher found a burst of momentum early on in the fourth quarter as three different Gophers recorded shots on goal, all of which were saved by Eidle.
Wilkes survived Goucher's pressure and transitioned play back onto the other side of the field, where they were awarded a penalty corner. After
Morgan Millard's (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg Area) initial shot was saved by Bloom,
Morgan Hermanofski (Shickshinny, PA/Northwest Area) picked up the rebound and scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season. The Colonels extended their lead to 2-0 at 11:38 into the fourth quarter, which they held for the remainder of the game.
Millard and
Kellie Scott (Northport, ME/Kents Hill) led the Colonels with three shots each, while
Cortney Keim (Trevorton, PA/Line Mountain) recorded a defensive save in the team's win. Eidle earned her second shutout of the season after making two saves on the day.
For the Gophers, Kaitlyn Bucci, Daryn Carter and Isa Schen all registered shots on goal. Bloom made eleven saves for Goucher.
The Colonels return to Schmidt Stadium on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. when they host cross-town rival King's College for Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night.
