Career-High 10 Saves for Kinzler Lifts Wilkes Men's Soccer Past Swarthmore 1-0

EDWARDSVILLE - An early Xavier Guerreiro (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) goal and a career-high 10 saves for goalkeeper Nick Kinzler (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) propelled the Wilkes University men's soccer team past the Swarthmore College Garnet 1-0 Tuesday night at Bruggeworth Field.

The victory moves the Colonels to 2-2-2 on the year while Swarthmore fall to 1-3-2.

Wilkes drew first blood early, as Herbert Ramirez's (Highstown, NJ/Highstown) pass sprung Guerreiro free on the right wing, and his shot from the right side of the box bounced off the hands of Swarthmore goalkeeper Logan Aboudara and into the back of the net to give the Colonels the lead in the fourth minute. Ramirez was credited with the assist.

From there, the Garnet dominated the offensive chances, out-shooting the Colonels 6-3. Kinzler made five saves in the first half.

The Garnet continued the pressure in the second half, peppering the Colonels net with seventeen shots to only three for Wilkes. Kinzler held strong in net for Wilkes with five more saves in the second frame. The Colonels defense also made their mark, blocking a three-shot flurry by the Garnet in the 87th minute.

First year Kendall Heck (West Wyoming, PA/Wyoming Area High School) provided the Colonels best opportunities in the second half, with two shots saved by Aboudara. Heck led Wilkes with three shots on goal in the contest.

Kinzler made his tenth and final save in the 88th minute on a shot from Koome Murungi as the Colonels held on for the 1-0 victory.

The Colonels will be back in action on Saturday, September 23rd as they welcome the Susquehanna University River Hawks to Bruggeworth Field for Wilkes's first Landmark Conference contest. Kick off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
