New Era of Wilkes Field Hockey Begins with Overtime Win at Oswego State

OSWEGO, NY – A new era of Wilkes University field hockey started in dramatic fashion as the Colonels won 3-2 in overtime to open the 2023 season in non-conference action at Oswego State Saturday afternoon. The victory is the first for head coach Ashley Irwin in her first game on the sidelines for the Colonels.

Wilkes is now 1-0 to start the season and Oswego State fell to 1-1 with the home loss.

First year Morgan Hermanofski (Shickshinny, PA/Northwest Area) scored the game-winner 7:18 into the overtime period for her first collegiate goal following a penalty corner.

Junior Kellie Scott (Northport, ME/Kents Hill) forced overtime with her third career goal as she found the back of the cage with only 15 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter on a penalty corner play.

Junior Lexie Nevel (Nescopeck, PA/Berwick) began the scoring in the game in the second quarter as she scored at the 18:16 mark to put Wilkes up 1-0 for her first career goal.

A third quarter penalty stroke goal and a fourth quarter goal at the 55:33 mark gave the host Lakers the 2-1 lead.

Junior Carly Eidle (East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen) earned the win for Wilkes as she made two saves. Ky Philips made three saves in the loss for the Lakers.

Both teams finished the game with eight shots, seven of which were on goal for the Colonels and five for the Lakers. Owego State led in penalty corners 8-6.
