Wilkes Women's Volleyball Sweeps Tri-Match against Wilson and Pitt-Bradford
CHAMBERSBURG, PA – The Wilkes University women's volleyball team swept its two non-conference matches at today's tri-match at the Gannett Field House, 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-19) over host Wilson College and 3-1 (25-21, 25-16, 15-2, 25-23) over the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.
With the pair of victories Wilkes improved to 7-8 overall this season. Wilson dropped to 0-15 with its loss to the Colonels while Pitt-Bradford fell to 2-12.
In the opening match against Wilson the Colonels trailed 8-5 in the first set before a six-point run led by three aces from
Ali Yordy (Fairfield, PA/Fairfield Area) put Wilkes ahead 11-8. The Colonels held the lead from there, stretching to as many as six points twice including at 25-19 when
Jenna Baron (Nanticoke, PA/Greater Nanticoke Area) put away a kill to end the first set.
Wilkes took a 10-5 lead following an
Allie Murie (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) kill in the second set. A big run by the Phoenix pushed the home side ahead 13-12 and they continued to lead at 19-16 and 22-20 before the Colonels scored the final five points to win the second set 25-22. A block by
Nicole Fitzpatrick (New Hampton, NY/Minisink Valley) and Baron followed by kills by
Alexis Reedy (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra Area) and Fitzpatrick put Wilkes up 23-22 and then and attack error by Wilson and a Reedy kill put the Colonels up 2-0.
Wilson led 11-4 in the third set before Wilkes used a 9-1 run to go ahead 13-12.
Sierra Hines (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Holy Redeemer) had three aces during the run. A Fitzpatrick ace put the Colonels up 19-14. From there Wilkes closed out the match with a 25-19 win as
Ava Wahlers (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) had the final kill.
Reedy led Wilkes with nine kills while Fitzpatrick and Baron added six.
Alexa Cassel (Mount Joy, PA/Lower Dauphin) had 25 assists. Baron recorded a career-high five blocks and Yordy led the backline defense with 14 digs.
Abby Moreland led Wilson with a match-high 12 kills and completed a double-double with 11 digs. Michaela Windisch recorded 22 assists and Addie Hebert led the Phoenix with 13 digs.
In the second match Pitt-Bradford led 13-11 in the first set before two kills by Reedy tied the score and a Cassel aces and block by Reedy and Hines put Wilkes ahead 15-13. It was a lead the Colonels would not give up as they won 25-21 on a Reedy kill for the final point.
The Colonels led throughout in the second set, winning 25-16 to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Reedy had two kills and Hines another in a key five-point run during the set that pushed the lead from 17-14 to 22-14.
The Panthers went ahead 8-3 early in the third set and did not look back, winning 25-15 to extend the match.
The fourth set was back and forth in the beginning with Wilkes going ahead 11-10 on a Fitzpatrick kill. That turned into a four-point run with another Fitzpatrick kill and a Baron kill. The Panthers fought back to take leads at 21-20 and 22-21. Fitzpatrick put down a kill to tie the score and Wilkes went ahead on a Pitt-Bradford attack error. A Panthers kill tied the score at 23-23. Reedy then sent Wilkes to the 3-1 match victory with back-to-back kills as Wilkes won the fourth 25-23.
Reedy led the offense with a season-high 18 kills and she added a team-high four aces. Hines tied her season-high with 12 kills and Fitzpatrick followed with eight kills. Cassel recorded a season-high 39 assists. Hines led Wilkes with three blocks at the net and Yordy again led with 15 digs.
Marissa Bowman led Pitt-Bradford with 10 kills and Chloe Bellis had 30 assists. Kayla Maslowski had a match-high 17 digs.
The Colonels stay on the road for a non-conference match at Neumann University in Aston, Pa. on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
