Defensive Battle With William Paterson Ends in Scoreless Tie for Wilkes Women's Soccer

WAYNE, N.J. – Despite a second-half push, the Wilkes University women's soccer team found themselves locked into a 0-0 tie with William Paterson University after 90 minutes in non-conference play Wednesday night.

Wilkes stands at 0-1-1 following the tie and William Paterson is now 0-1-2 overall.

Goalkeeper Hannah Landis (Red Hill, PA/Upper Perkiomen) was tested early by the Pioneers, who forced Landis to make a save just 3:17 into the game.

The majority of the first half was contained to mid-field as both teams did a good job preventing attacks from reaching the goalkeepers. At 36:35, Madison Straub (Franklin, NJ/Franklin) registered the first shot on goal for the Colonels but was turned away by William Paterson goalie Sarah Mantilla.

Going into halftime, the Colonels and Pioneers were deadlocked with one shot on goal apiece and scoreless after 45 minutes on the pitch.

Wilkes started off the second half by trapping the Pioneers in their own zone. The terrific offensive pressure was led in large part by the Feese sisters, who fired four shots off in just under a minute and a half.

At 50:45, Erica Feese (State College, PA/State College Area) delivered a shot on goal that was saved by Mantilla. Erica and her sister Holly Feese (State College, PA/State College Area) then traded shots towards the goal before Holly was stopped on her second attempt at 52:14.

Wilkes continued to test the Pioneers' goalkeeper throughout the latter half of the match. Taylor Golin (Springfield, NJ/Jonathan Dayton) delivered two shots on goal, while E. Feese sent one more attempt in on Mantilla in the final ten minutes of the game.

When the game clock hit 90:00, Wilkes had recorded seven shots on goal to William Paterson's two - all of which were saved.

E. Feese and Golin led the Colonels with three total shots each. On the Pioneers' side, Julia Fiorito and Erin Clark each registered a shot on goal.

The Colonels return home to Bruggeworth Field on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. matinee against University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg.
