Wilkes Women's Basketball Bested by Susquehanna 65-49

SELLINSGROVE, Pa. – The Wilkes University women's basketball team was bested on the road Friday evening, losing 65-49 at Susquehanna University.

The Colonels fall to 6-9 on the year with the loss and 2-6 in Landmark play, while the River Hawks improve to 10-5 overall with a 5-3 record in the conference.

Wilkes took an early lead in the first quarter as Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) opened the scoring for the Colonels with a shot made either side of the arc to give the Colonels a 5-2 lead. The River Hawks came back to take the lead with 3:45 left in the first quarter and held the lead to the end of the quarter 14-9.

In the second quarter, Susquehanna built their lead to an 11-point gap holding a 23-12 advantage. Brenna Babcock (Sweet Valley, PA/Northwest Area) finished off a 9-2 Colonel run to close the River Hawk lead to four points but were unable to take the lead going into the half as Susquehanna pulled away once more to take a 33-27 lead into halftime.

The River Hawks took the momentum from the end of the first and took the victory, leading the entire second half to a 65-49 win.

Matos was the top scorer for the Colonels with 14 points, while Babcock and Erin Shober (Reading, PA/Wilson) held the team high in rebounds with five each. Babcock also led the team with five assists.

Shober registered seven blocks on the day, enough to surpass Ellen Rich's record of 136 career blocks to become the new program record holder.

Julia Roth led Susquehanna in points and rebounds with 16 and 10 each for a double-double. Carly George led in assists with four.

The Colonels return to the Marts Center on Wednesday, January 17 for their next contest as they host Moravian University.
