Wilkes Women's Ice Hockey Fires on All Cylinders in 4-1 UCHC Win at Chatham
PITTSBURGH, PA – The Wilkes University women's ice hockey team earned an impressive 4-1 victory as four different players scored at Chatham University Friday afternoon in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) play.
Wilkes improved to 7-6-1 overall and 5-6-1 in the UCHC with the road victory. The loss for Chatham was just its second of the season as the Cougars are now 8-2-2 overall and 6-2-1 in the league. The victory also marked the 75th career coaching win for head coach
Dave LaBaff.
The Colonels gained a 1-0 lead when
Lily Zingaro (Collingwood, ON) scored on a rebound from a
Chayce Hyndman (Mountain, ON) shot from the point at the 13:46 mark of the first period that was initially deflected by
Jordan Ferry (Bohemia, NY). It was Zingaro's third goal of the season and Hyndman's first career assist.
Wilkes stretched the lead in the middle of the second period as
Milica Velcek (Novi Sad, Serbia) scored her third of the season off a rebound from a
Haylee Bouchard (Sioux Lookout, ON) shot 9:30 into the period. Just 39 seconds later the Colonels made it 3-0 as Hyndman fired a slap shot into the net from the center of the ice of the offensive zone for her second goal of the year.
Sabrina Kotlarczyk (Notre-Dame-de-l'Île-Perrot, QC) and
Amanda Spreadbury (Suwanee, GA) were credited with assists on the play as the Cougars called a timeout.
Ferry extended the lead to 4-0 at the 13:13 mark of the third period with a power play goal for her fifth tally of the season. Ferry scored on her second shot of the sequence after taking an initial pass from Hyndman and having her wrist shot saved, Ferry and
Tilly Wierdsma (New Hartford, CT) battled to regain possession before she fired a shot past the goalkeeper.
Audrey Milne (London, ON) nearly had her fourth shutout victory, but the Cougars were able to score with 58 seconds left in the third to make it 4-1. Milne earned her sixth win of the season and career to tie her for the team career record as she made 30 saves.
Lilly Rogers made 21 saves for Chatham.
Wilkes went 1-for-2 on the power play and were perfect on the penalty kill, forcing the Cougars to a 0-for-5 mark. The Cougars held a 31-25 shots advantage and 30-23 edge at the faceoff dot.
Ferry led Wilkes with 10 faceoff wins and
Rachel Morey (Buffalo, WY/) added five.
The two sides finish their UCHC series tomorrow with a game at 2:00 p.m. in Pittsburgh, Pa.
