Berry's Late Goal Lifts Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey to 4-3 Win at LVC
HERSHEY, PA –
Billy Berry's (Redding, CT) goal with 4:57 left in the third period broke open a 2-2 tie and
Jimmy O'Kane (Chicago, IL/Notre Dame Prep) added an empty-netter as the Wilkes University men's ice hockey team finished off the season sweep of Lebanon Valley College as the Colonels posted a 4-3 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) victory Saturday night at the historic Hershey Park Arena.
Wilkes improved to 13-6 overall and 11-3 in UCHC games following the season sweep. LVC dropped to 3-16 overall and 2-12 in conference contests.
O'Kane notched his first goal of the game on the penalty kill when he found the back of the net at 15:46 of the first period to give the Colonels a 1-0 advantage.
Daniel Nau (Wake Forest, NC) extended the lead to 2-0 2:06 into the second period when he scored off an assist from
Joe Johnson (Midland, MI/) and
Teague Porter (Anchorage, AK). LVC managed to cut the lead in half with a goal at 12:22 in the second frame as Wilkes led by one heading into the third period.
LVC made the comeback complete 13:04 into the third period as Dylan Miller scored on even strength tying the game at 2-2. That's when Berry became the hero firing home the game-winner off a pass from O'Kane with just under five minutes left to play to give Wilkes a 3-2 lead. O'Kane added the empty-net goal with :48 on the clock to seal the conference road win. LVC added one more tally with a second on the clock, but it was not enough as Wilkes held on for the victory.
Wilkes held a big shot advantage throughout outshooting LVC 85-55 including 44-33 shots on goal.
Jack Perna (Sykesville, MD) recorded the win in net for the Colonels finishing with 31 saves on the night.
Wilkes returns to the rink next Saturday hosting UCHC foe Nazareth University for game one of the two game set with puck drop set for 7:00 p.m. at the Toyota SportsPlex.
