Wilkes Women's Basketball Sweeps Juniata Behind 23 Point Second Quarter
HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Wilkes women's basketball team turned Memorial Gymnasium into a no-fly zone Saturday afternoon, taking down Juniata College 60-52 to complete the season sweep of the Eagles.
The Colonels improve to 8-11 on the year and 4-8 in Landmark play, while the Eagles fall to 2-17 overall and 1-11 against conference competition.
Juniata took an early 7-4 lead over the Colonels, before
Taylor Simpson (Dunmore, PA/Lawrenceville School) equalized at 7-7 with a three-pointer. The Eagles scored three shots from the free-throw line over the rest of the first quarter to finish with a 10-7 lead.
Wilkes' offense exploded in the second frame, outscoring Juniata 12-9 to take a 19-13 lead with five minutes remaining in the half. Three-pointers from
Emma Stout (Bangor, PA/Bangor) and
Reagan Holden (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Wilkes-Barre Area) punctuated the Colonel scoring run.
Stout and Holden weren't the only ones getting in on the fun from beyond the arc, as
Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) added a pair of triples and Simpson hit one to bring the Colonels to 5-9 from deep in the quarter. The Colonels put up 23 points in the frame to take a 30-18 halftime lead.
Brenna Babcock (Sweet Valley, PA/Northwest Area) opened the second half with five points on a layup and a three-pointer of her own as the Colonels led a close 7-6 run to boost their advantage to 37-24 with 6:45 to go in the frame. A 7-6 Juniata run deadlocked both teams at 13 points in the quarter and the Colonels maintained their 12-point lead going into the fourth quarter up 43-31.
Wilkes stretched their lead out to as much as 16 points in the fourth quarter, but Juniata came storming back on a 15-9 run to make it a 52-46 game with 1:39 left, but the Colonels fought off the charge and took a 60-52 victory.
Matos put up a double-double on 13 points and 10 rebounds, leading the Colonels in both categories. Babcock was the other Colonel in double-digits with 10 points of her own, while Holden added nine points off the bench. Matos also led the team in assists with five. In total, Wilkes made nine three-pointers in the game.
