Rogers Named Offensive Coordinator of Wilkes Football
WILKES-BARRE – Wilkes University head football coach
David Biever has announced the hiring of Matt Rogers as the Colonels Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach on Friday morning.
A familiar face to the program, Rogers returns for his second stint on the Wilkes football staff having served as Running Backs coach for two seasons in 2019 and 2020. He led in coaching and evaluation of running backs during that time while also helping with the offensive gameplan. During that time Rogers helped increase the Colonels win total by three games in 2019 as the squad earned its first postseason bid in nine years.
"Matt is a coach that I have known for a few years now and he is back for his second time at Wilkes," said Biever. "He is a very smart offensive mind and I am very excited about what our offense will do under his leadership", he added. "He will also coach our quarterbacks which will be very important as we transition into our new brand of offensive football here at Wilkes," Biever noted.
Most recently Rogers served three years as Assistant Head Coach, Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach at SUNY Morrisville. At Morrisville Rogers led an offense that improved in every statistical category including yards per-game, yards per-play, passing yards and passing touchdowns. In 2022 he helped the Mustangs increased their win total by five games and earn a postseason bid for the first time since 2019.
Individually at Morrisville, Rogers coached 16 All-Conference players including quarterbacks in back-to-back years in 2022 and 2023.
Rogers began his coaching career at his alma mater Utica University where he graduated in 2016 with a degree in Journalism. At Utica he also coached the running backs where he led the unit to two single-season and two all-time leading rushers in 2016 and 2018. The Pioneers also reached the postseason twice in his time in New York including the program's first victory in the 2018 ECAC Scotty Whitelaw Bowl.
A proven recruiter in the tri-state area, Rogers is also a member of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA).
"I have seen first-hand how Matt can lead players on and off the field and he has proven he knows what it takes to recruit quality student-athletes to our program at Wilkes," explained Biever.
Rogers will take over a high-powered Colonel offense that ranked second in the Landmark Conference in scoring averaging over 30.5 points per-game and 368.2 yards per-game. The offense was well-balanced finishing second in rushing with over 170 yards per-game on the ground and 21 touchdowns and third in passing with 198.2 yards per-game through the air including 23 touchdowns.
