Wilkes Men's Volleyball Sweeps Wilson to Stay Unbeaten at Home

WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University men's volleyball team pushed its home unbeaten streak to eight matches as the Colonels posted a 3-0 sweep over Wilson College Thursday night inside the Marts Center. Wilkes took the match by scores of 25-14, 25-16 and 25-22.

Wilkes improved to 13-4 overall while Wilson fell to 3-6 on the year. The Colonels have yet to lose on its home court improving to 8-0 on the year.

Aidan Hunter (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson) led seven Colonels who recorded kills in the match with a team-best 10 kills on 24 swings. Lucas Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) followed with seven kills, five digs and two blocks while Jackson Shafer (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) added six kills, five service aces, seven digs and five total blocks. Paul Binner (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock) contributed five kills and four aces.

Wilson kept things close early in the first set before the Colonels anchored down and started to build their lead. With the set tied at eight, Wilkes rattled off four straight points including three straight kills from Hunter. The lead grew to seven at 17-10 following a L. Mages kill before back-to-back kills from Shafer grew the advantage to 23-13. Shafer then finished off the set with a kill to give Wilkes a 1-0 lead in the match.

Set two began much like the first as both teams traded points early before a Wilkes run gave the Colonels some breathing room. Hunter and L. Mages recorded kills during the scoring stretch that gave Wilkes a 15-9 lead. Binner made good on two of his four service aces to push the advantage to 22-12 before a kill and Wilson attack error clinched the set for the Colonels.

Wilson kept a small lead early in the third and final set before Wilkes again used a mid-set rally to tie the match at 11 thanks to a Hunter kill. Jacob Haller (Birdsboro, PA/Exeter Township) posted two consecutive service aces to give the Colonels a 19-16 lead before Hunter and Shafer clinched the match with kills to seal the third set three-point win.

Wilkes continues its home stretch Tuesday with a match against Arcadia University scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Marts Center.
