Wilkes Men's Volleyball Sweeps Tri-Match against Wilson College and Saint Vincent College

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Wilkes men's volleyball team put on a dominant performance at the Gannett Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon, sweeping the tri-match at Wilson College.

The Colonels posted a 3-1 win over the hosting Phoenix to start the day and added a 3-0 sweep of Saint Vincent College in the day's second match, boosting their record to 6-1 on the year.

Wilkes won the match against Wilson by scores of 25-22, 25-12, 17-25, and 25-19. After a closely contested first set, Wilkes put together a 10-0 run in the middle of the set to seal the victory thanks to kills by Jackson Shafer (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) and Lucas Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central). Down 14-12 in the fourth set, the Colonels strung together an 8-1 run to swing momentum in their favor and finish the match off with a victory.

Shafer led the Wilkes offense and defense with 13 kills to match 13 digs, while Zach Shay (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) led the team with 28 assists.

The Colonels then swept Saint Vincent College by scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-22. Three service aces from Jacob Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) helped spark an 8-0 run that put Wilkes in the driver's seat to take the first set. Down 15-14 in the second set, a 10-2 run set up Shay to get the final kill of the set to give the Colonels a 2-0 lead over the Bearcats. Up 23-18 the final set, the Colonels held off a tough final charge from Saint Vincent to take the set and the match 25-22.

Shafer had another stellar performance, leading the team in kills (13) and digs (6), while sharing the top spot in aces (3, J. Mages) and blocks (4, L. Mages). Shay once again led the Colonels in assists with 16.

The team hits the court again on Tuesday, February 6 as they travel to take on Eastern University at 7:00 p.m.
