Elizabethtown Takes Three Sets 25-20 to Defeat Wilkes Men's Volleyball

WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University men's volleyball team lost three nearly identical sets by 25-20 scores to Elizabethtown College at the Marts Center Wednesday night.

Wilkes is now 13-8 overall while Elizabethtown improved to 13-8 overall with the win.

In the first set the Colonels tied the match at 11 following a kill by Aidan Hunter (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson) and two by Jackson Shafer (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley). Wilkes gained a 13-12 lead after a service error and attack error on the Blue Jays but that was the last time the Colonels led as Elizabethtown went on an extended 13-7 run to win the set 25-20.

Wilkes led 6-4 early in the second set before the Blue Jays went on a run through the middle portion of the game. The Colonels closed the score to 22-20 but E-Town scored the final three points to take the second set 25-20 as well.

After leading 5-4 early in the third set the Colonels closed the Elizabethtown lead to one point five times including 15-14 following a Jacob Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) kill but the visitors were able to outscore Wilkes 10-6 the rest of the way to win again 25-20 and sweep the match.

Shafer led Wilkes with 14 kills while Hunter added six. Zach Shay (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) had 26 assists. Defensively, Paul Binner (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock) had five total blocks and Noah Taylor (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional) led with seven digs.

E-Town was led by 14 kills by Logan Smith and 13 from Alex Finch. Nate Seeger had 43 assists. Dustin Hagin finished with 11 digs.

Wilkes remains home to host Hood College on Friday at 7:00 p.m. inside the Marts Center.
