Wilkes Softball Sweeps Marywood in Mental Health Awareness Game Doubleheader

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – The Wilkes softball team, clad in emerald green jerseys, swept Marywood University at the Ralston Athletic Complex on Thursday afternoon in their Mental Health Awareness games. The Colonels were victorious in game one 5-0 and ended game two early winning 12-4 in five innings.

The Colonels improve to 10-6 on the year with the pair of victories, while the Pacers fall to 8-6 on the year.

Game one remained scoreless until the bottom of the third inning, when Haylee Calaman (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown Area) hit an RBI double to left field that brought home Megan Marshall (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead. The Colonels flexed their power with three home runs to add the other four runs of the game.

First to send the ball over the fence was Olivia Dougher (Scranton, PA/West Scranton), who smashed a solo shot over the left field fence in the fourth inning to double the Colonel lead. Hana Cross (South Brunswick, NJ/South Brunswick) had the same idea, with a two-run blast to left for her team-leading fifth home run of the year in the fifth inning. Hayden Calaman (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown Area) made it 5-0 later that inning with a third rocket over the left field fence to make it 5-0.

Wilkes' defense was lights out the entire game, as Lauren DeMarco (Merrick, NY/Sanford H. Calhoun) (4-0) pitched her second consecutive shutout performance, allowing only two hits through seven innings with 12 strikeouts, matching her career high. Dougher was perfect at the plate for the Colonels going 3-for-3 with one RBI and a home run.

Marissa Gregory (5-3) pitched a complete game effort in the loss, allowing five earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.

The Pacers responded with a quick start in game two, drawing first blood in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Hay. Calaman responded in the bottom of the opening frame with another left field double that drove in Mia Butka (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) and Cross to take a 2-1 lead. In the third inning, Dougher crushed another ball over the left field wall, this time a three-run blast, for her second home run of the day to give the Colonels a 5-1 lead.

Marywood fought back in the top of the fifth inning, making it a one run game now down 5-4. The Colonels put out the flames of a comeback in their half of the frame, scoring seven runs to end the game with a mercy rule. Nicole Howell (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock Area) drove in a run on a groundout to make the game 6-5, before Kayla Burleson (West Chester, PA/B. Reed Henderson) hit an RBI double to add another run.

Hannah Boyd's (Escalon, CA/Escalon) double to right center brought home Burleson and made it an 8-4 game, followed by a two RBI single through the right side by Butka that gave the Colonels a 10-4 lead. Finally, Hayd. Calaman put the game to rest with a walk-off double to bring home Butka and her sister Haylee that ended the game 12-4.

Sami Hendershott (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) (3-0) got the win in a complete-game performance, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits with four strikeouts. Dougher was once again flawless at bat going 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Hayl. Calaman also added three RBIs and went 3-for-4 at the dish.

Sam Ferrara (3-1) took the decision for the Pacers, pitching three innings allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits with one strikeout. Marley Sarafinko led the team with two RBIs while Kat Davis was the only Pacer with a multi-hit game.

The Colonels return to the Ralston Athletic Complex on the other side of the Easter weekend as they welcome the University of Scranton for a Landmark Conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 3. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
