Wilkes Softball Splits Monday Action Following 8-0 Victory over Kenyon

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The Wilkes University softball team used four runs in the first and four in the fifth to defeat Kenyon College 8-0 in five innings on Monday at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic at the NMB Sports Complex. Penn State Abington defeated Wilkes 3-0 in the first game of the day as the Colonels split their Monday game on their spring break trip.

Wilkes is now 3-1 overall while Penn State Abington won its season opener to move to 1-0 and Kenyon dropped to 1-3 overall.

The day's second game started strong for the Colonels as Hana Cross (South Brunswick, NJ/South Brunswick) walked in the bottom of the first and then went to third on a Hannah Boyd (Escalon, CA/Escalon) double. Haylee Calaman (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown Area) then drove in both Cross and Boyd with a two-run single up the middle. Nicole Howell (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock Area) then singled through the left side and Calaman and Howell would advance to third and second on a groundout by Hope Mullins (Midland, VA/Liberty). Hayden Calaman (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown Area) then knocked a two RBI double to left center to bring in her sister and Howell to make it 4-0.

The Colonels kept Kenyon off the scoreboard and then in the bottom of the fifth broke the game open with four more run. Hayl. Calaman led off with a walk and Howell and Mullins each followed with walks to load the bases. Following a pitching change, Hayd. Calaman singled to right to bring in her sister and Howell to make it 6-0 as Mullins went to third. Mullins then scored on a wild pitch and Hayd. Calaman moved to third. Olivia Dougher (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) then ended the game due to the eight-run rule as she hit an RBI groundout to shortstop with Hayd. Calaman scoring.

Sami Hendershott (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) (1-0) pitched the complete game shutout going 5.0 innings and allowing just three hits and two walks. Hendershott struck out one.

Hayd. Calaman was 2-for-3 with four RBIs and Hayl. Calaman was 1-for-1 with two RBIs and two walks. Cross was 1-for-1 with two walks and Boyd, Howell, and Dougher each had one hit with Dougher picking up an RBI.

Kylie Hamm (1-2) took the loss as she started and went 0.1 innings allowing four runs on four hits with one walk. Amanda Harris pitched 3.2 innings allowing three runs on two hits and five walks while striking out two. Allison McCutchen pitched the final 0.1 inning allowing one run on one hit.

The morning started with the Colonels facing Penn State Abington and the game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when the Nittany Lions scored three runs with a triple, wild pitch, two singles, and a sacrifice fly.

Wilkes was unable to get the offense going in suffering its first loss of the season.

Mia Butka (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) (1-1) started her first collegiate game in the circle and took the loss. She pitched all 7.0 innings allowing three runs on eight hits with two walks and nine strikeouts.

Boyd, Howell, and Butka each collected one hit.

Gretchen Yanss (1-0) pitched the complete game shutout for Penn State Abington as she went 7.0 innings allowing just three hits and no walks with five strikeouts.

The Colonels are off tomorrow and return to the field for two games on Wednesday. First Wilkes faces Bridgewater State University at 9:00 a.m. and then the Colonels finish the day against Rosemont College at 11:00 a.m.
