Wilkes Baseball Finishes Landmark Conference Play with Loss against Scranton
EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – In a game completed on Wednesday thanks to rain, the Wilkes baseball team concluded Landmark Conference play with a hard-fought loss against the University of Scranton 9-7 at Bruggeworth Field.
Wilkes finish their inaugural conference campaign with an 11-13 record, falling to 21-16 overall, while Scranton finished 16-7 in conference play and improve to 27-10 overall.
Mike Show (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) opened the scoring in the first inning with an RBI triple to right field to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead, but a six-run second inning put Scranton ahead by five. In the bottom of the second,
Jacob Cambria (Elysburg, PA/Southern Columbia) hit an RBI single to center field to score
Todd Kolbicka (Hanover Twp., PA/Hanover) and make it 6-2.
The Colonel defense didn't let up any runs in the third and fourth innings, and the offense closed the gap in the bottom of the fourth. First,
Luke Spencer (Lehman, PA/Lake Lehman) scored
Connor Morgan (Lehman, PA/Lake Lehman) with a single to center field, then Show added two more RBIs to his day with a single to right center that scored Cambria and
Nathan Loch (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley). With the score now 6-5, the skies opened up and rain pushed the game to Wednesday afternoon.
Back at Bruggeworth with clear skies on Wednesday, the Colonel defense opened the day where they left off, keeping the Royals scoreless through the fifth and sixth innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Spencer scored on a wild throw to third to tie the game at six.
A three-run seventh gave the Royals the lead back 9-6, but Wilkes didn't go down without a fight scoring one run in the ninth, a groundout by
Devin Markert (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) that scored
Zack Luksic (Shavertown, PA/Dallas), but were unable to complete the comeback and fell 9-7.
Ryan Cosby (Buford, GA/Mountain View (GA)) (0-1) was responsible for two baserunners who scored in the seventh, giving him the decision. He finished the day allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit with three strikeouts. Show led the Colonel offense going 2-for-5 with three RBIs, while Spencer also had a solid performance at the plate going 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Jason Carpenter (3-1) got the win for the Royals allowing one run (unearned) on three hits with four strikeouts through 3.2 innings of relief for starter Thomas Plunkett. Six Royals registered hits in the game and five were credited with RBIs.
The Colonels rebound quickly from the loss and head to Marywood University on Thursday, May 2 for a non-conference matchup with the Pacers. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
