Wilkes Men's Volleyball Splits Saturday Tri-Match Against SUNY Potsdam and Manhattanville

PURCHASE, NY - The Wilkes men's volleyball team split their tri-match against SUNY Potsdam and Manhattanville on Saturday, falling to the Bears and defeating the Valiants. 

 

Game 1 | Wilkes 2, SUNY Potsdam 3

The Colonels dropped their first match of the day against the Bears after a hard fought five sets. Wilkes fell in the first two sets 25-15 and 28-26 before winning the following two sets 26-24 and 25-22. SUNY Potsdam took the fifth set and the game with a 15-9 win. 

Jackson Shafer (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) led the team in kills with 24, followed by Lucas Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) with 14. Evanston Myers (Lake Winola, PA/Tunkhannock) led in blocks with five, and Shafer followed with two blocks as well as two aces. Joshua Conley (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks South) led in assists with 44 and Alex Derk (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) led with 13 digs. Shafer recorded nine digs and Coney had eight. Aidan Hunter (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson) tallied 12 kills and two blocks during the match.

The Colonels outperformed the Bears in kills with 64 total over their 62, as well as in assists with 61 compared to their 54 and in digs with 49 over their 42.
 

Game 2 | Wilkes 3, Manhattanville 1

The Colonels defeated the Valiants in four sets to record their first win of the season. Wilkes took the first two sets 26-24 and 25-22 with Manhattanville taking the third set 26-24 before the Colonels took the win with a 25-17 score in the fourth set. 

Leading the team in kills was Shafer, who recorded 16, along with Lucas Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) with 11 and Jacob Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) with six. Jacob Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) led in blocks with seven, followed by Lucas Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) and Myers with five. Conley recorded 30 assists and Ryan McCorry (Tuckerton, NJ/Pinelands) had the team high in digs with nine, followed by Shafer and Sam Winter (Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central) with eight. Shafer, Jacob Haller (Birdsboro, PA/Exeter Township) and McCorry each recorded an ace as well. 

Wilkes outperformed the Valiants in kills with 44 over their 43, as well as in blocks with 14 compared to their four, and in assists with 41 over their 38.

The Colonels will be back at home on Tuesday, January 21, as they host Lancaster Bible College. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
