Late Goal Lifts PSU Harrisburg Over Wilkes Field Hockey 2-1
MIDDLETOWN, PA – Ami Mattingly scored the game-winning goal 59 seconds into the fourth quarter to list host Penn State Harrisburg to a 2-1 non-conference victory over the Wilkes University field hockey team Wednesday night.
Wilkes fell to 6-5 overall following the road defeat while Penn State Harrisburg improved to 8-1 overall on the season.
After a scoreless first half, Wilkes struck first when
Lydia Keppel (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) settled a ball off a penalty corner from
Sage Morgan (Dallas, PA/Lake Lehman) and found the back of the cage at the 39:14 mark of the third quarter.
PSU Harrisburg responded later in the third frame as Mattingly scored her first goal of the game at 41:52 off an assist from Anna Moyer.
From there Mattingly played hero notching her team-best 16
th goal of the season just under a minute into the fourth quarter that proved to be the game-winner.
PSU Harrisburg outshot the Colonels 14-5 while the hosts garnered 11 penalty corners to Wilkes' seven attempts.
Chloe Gilroy (Manchester, NH/Pace University) started and played all 60 minutes in goal for Wilkes finishing with nine saves.
Wilkes returns to Landmark Conference play Saturday when the Colonels welcome Juniata College for a game at 4:00 p.m.
