Wilkes Women's Soccer Concludes Regular Season with Defeat Against Lycoming
EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – Needing a win to make the Landmark Conference playoffs, the Wilkes University women's soccer team came up just short at Bruggeworth Field Tuesday night, falling to Lycoming College 4-2.
Wilkes ends the season 6-7-5 overall and 2-4-3 in conference play, while Lycoming heads to the Landmark playoffs with a 17-1-1 record and 7-1-1 against conference opponents.
The Colonels started the game hot with two quick chances on the Lycoming goal inside the first five minutes, but it would be
Taylor Anthony's (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) strike in the 40
th minute that put Wilkes on the board after an assist by
Morgan Sweed (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen).
The Warriors quickly responded in the 43
rd minute as Julia Bidelspach scored to level the game again going into halftime. That momentum carried through the break as the visitors took the lead in the 48
th as Hannah Wood put home a cross from Aubrey Williamson.
A handball in the 65
th minute by the Warriors gave Wilkes the chance to equalize from the penalty spot, and it was
Riley Mastriani (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) who perfectly placed the ball in the bottom-right corner to tie the game once more at 2-2.
The deadlock would not last long, as Lycoming once again found a quick response in the 67
th minute. Wood completed her brace on another corner kick to put the visitors back in front, and an 81
st minute goal by Ella Magee sealed the victory for the Warriors.
Anthony and
Maggie Allen (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) led Wilkes with two shots on goal each, with six total Colonels putting a shot on goal. Between the sticks,
Delaney Yaracs (Butler, PA/Butler) made four saves.
Wood led the Warriors with two goals, while Bidelspach led the team with three shots on goal. In goal, Riley Block made six saves in the win.
