Karp's Two Goals Propel Wilkes Field Hockey Over Lycoming 3-1 and Into Landmark Championship Tournament
WILLIAMSPORT, PA –
Maddie Karp (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) scored a pair of goals and goalie
Chloe Gilroy (Manchester, NH/Pace University) made five saves to lead the Wilkes University field hockey team to a postseason-clinching 3-1 Landmark Conference victory at Lycoming College Wednesday night at UPMC Field.
With the win, Wilkes improved to 9-10 overall and finished Landmark play at 4-5. Lycoming fell to 10-7 overall and 4-5 in league games. The win secured the Colonels the fifth seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference Tournament starting on Saturday. Wilkes finished tied with Lycoming and Goucher College at 4-5, with each team going 1-1 against each other. Wilkes earned the tiebreaker with a victory over third seed Elizabethtown College as both Lycoming and Goucher fell to the Blue Jays.
Karp put the Colonels on the board first with an unassisted goal 8:25 into the first quarter. The 1-0 lead would stand through the rest of the first half and the third quarter before
Emma Lautenbacher (Bangor, PA/Bangor) pushed the advantage to 2-0 with a strike 8:19 into the fourth quarter. Karp put the game out of reach with her second of the night five minutes later thanks to an assist from
Elizabeth Hodder (Elysburg, PA/Southern Columbia).
Lycoming scored with under a minute remaining, but it wasn't enough as Wilkes punched its ticket to the conference tournament for the second time as a member of the Landmark Conference.
Wilkes held a 15-7 shot advantage while garnering two penalty corners to Lycoming's six attempts.
Gilroy was solid as usual in goal making five saves just allowing the one goal late in the game.
Wilkes will made its second appearance in the Landmark Conference postseason tournament and first since 2023 where the Colonels earned the sixth seed.
Wilkes will travel to fourth seeded Drew University Saturday in a first round matchup scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Drew posted a 2-0 victory over the Colonels in their only matchup this season on October 15 in Madison, N.J.
