Wilkes Field Hockey Falls in Overtime Against Susquehanna
EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – The Wilkes field hockey team faced a narrow loss to Susquehanna University on Wednesday with a 2-1 loss in overtime.
After tonight's loss, the Colonels fall to 7-6 overall and 2-1 in conference while Susquehanna improves to 2-8 overall and 2-1 in conference.
Susquehanna jumped to the attack in the first half, earning 11 penalty corners and putting up 15 shots with nine being on goal, but couldn't find the back of the net as
Chloe Gilroy (Manchester, NH/Pace University) put up nine saves to keep the River Hawks at bay. The Colonels struggled to find their stride in the first quarter, but found their groove in the second, making their way down the field for a penalty corner. From there, Taylor Minnick connected on a cross from
Lydia Keppel (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) at the 23rd minute to break the deadlock. Wilkes' defense held firm and finished the half 1-0.
Coming out of halftime, Hannah Dreisbach of Susquehanna found the back of the Colonels' net (31:34) to tie the game at one. The River Hawks kept the pressure on Wilkes, as they went on to take 18 shots with ten being on goal, but Gilroy put up nine saves and Courtney Keim added a defensive save to finish regulation time tied at one, forcing the game to overtime.
Susquehanna moved quickly as Emma Campitelli found the back of the cage at 60:53 to end the game for the River Hawks.
Susquehanna outshout Wilkes 35-3 with 21 being on goal. The River Hawks also earned 21 penalty corners compared to three for Wilkes.
Gilroy was in net for the Colonels for the night, and reached a new career high recording 18 saves on 20 shots.
Emma Lautenbacher (Bangor, PA/Bangor) and Minnick each recorded a shot-on-goal, but it was Minnick's that reached the back of the net for the lone goal.
The Colonels return to action on Saturday, Oct. 11 where they host Catholic University in Schmidt Stadium at 1:00p.m.
