Big Fourth Quarter Lifts Moravian Over Wilkes Women's Basketball 63-50
BETHLEHEM, PA -- The Wilkes University women's basketball team jumped out to a ten point lead at the half only to see host Moravian University use a 26-point fourth quarter to complete the comeback in Landmark Conference play Saturday afternoon at Johnston Hall.
Wilkes slipped to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in Landmark play following the road defeat. Moravian improved to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in league games.
Moravian led by two after one quarter of play as both teams fired in baskets back-and-forth. The Colonels outscored the Greyhounds 19-7 over the second ten minutes of play to take a 36-26 advantage to the break. Back-to-back scores from
Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) and
Maliyah Warren (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) pushed the Colonels ahead by five with just under two minutes left in the half before five straight points from Matos finished the frame including a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer.
Wilkes continued to hold its lead at nine points after three quarters before the furious Moravian comeback started in the fourth. The Greyhounds connected on eight field goals and went a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line in the final stanza outscoring Wilkes 26-4 in the frame on way to the conference home win.
Warren led the scoring attack for Wilkes finishing with 19 points and five rebounds. Matos added 17 points and nine rebounds.
Moravian had two players reach double figures as Megan Elias led the squad with 17 points including a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe.
Wilkes is back in action Tuesday when it travels to cross-town rival King's College for a non-conference game scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
