Wilkes Men's Basketball Drops Heartbreaker to Moravian 93-91
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Wilkes men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to Moravian after a last second shot lifted the Greyhounds to a 93-91 win at the Johnston Hall Saturday afternoon.
The Colonels fall to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the Landmark while Moravian improves to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in conference.
Moravian opened the scoring racing to a 16-4 lead six minutes into the half. The Colonels were able to cut the deficit to seven (12-19) as
Jack Argento (Hershey, PA/Hershey) found
Antonio Brittain (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) in the paint for a layup, but Moravian would go on an 11-3 run over the next three minutes to extend their lead 30-17. A
Daniel Santaniello (Roaring Brook Twp., PA/Scranton Prep) layup closed the gap to five, but two Greyhound triples would give them a 49-40 lead going into the second.
Wilkes would score first in the second with an Argento layup and Santaniello triple, and would continue to put pressure on Moravian as an
Eli Becker (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) field goal put the game within two possessions to prompt a Greyhound timeout. The Colonels would then go on an 18-0 to control the game going into the final minutes of the half. With 1:00 left on the clock, Argento drove in for two and added a free throw to extend their lead, but a deep Colonel foul would put the Greyhounds within one-point (91-90). With five seconds left, Moravian's Chad Kratzer scored inside to clinch the lead with the Greyhounds adding one free-throw to finish the game 93-91.
Santaniello led for the Colonels with 21 points, shooting 50% from the field and from deep while going 7-9 from the line, and led the team in rebounds with nine. Argento was right behind him with 20 points, going 9-15 inside the arc and 2-3 at the line, while also leading the team in assists with six. Brittain provided power off the bench, scoring 17 while also grabbing six boards for the game.
Marquis Ratcliff hit double-double territory for the Greyhounds, putting up 31-points and grabbing 10 boards on the night. Chad Kratzer had 26 points while Porter Kelly had 23 points and led the team in assists with seven.
The Colonels return to action on Wednesday, December 3 as they travel to Susquehanna to take on the Red Hawks at 7:00 p.m.
