No. 5 Wilkes Field Hockey Falls to Top-Seeded University of Scranton in Landmark Semifinals

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Wilkes University field hockey team's historic run came to an end Tuesday night, as they were defeated by the top-seeded University of Scranton Royals 3-2 at Weiss Field.

Wilkes finished the season 10-11 overall after reaching their first Landmark Conference semifinal.

The Colonel defense held firm in the first half, including a key defensive save from Olivia Gayoski (Forty Fort, PA/Wyoming Valley West) in the first quarter. Goaltender Chloe Gilroy (Manchester, NH/Pace University) made six saves in the first 30 minutes to keep the game scoreless going into halftime.

Three minutes into the second half, Maddie Karp (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) connected a pass to Georgia Baskett (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg) who crept in behind the Scranton defense to score and give Wilkes the 1-0 lead.

With less than one minute left in the third Scranton found their equalizer off a penalty corner, scored by Maggie Keys. In the 52nd minute, the Royals took the lead off another penalty corner and scored a third one minute later to double the lead.

Karp added another goal for the Colonels in the 55th minute, as she rifled a shot from the top of the arc to convert the penalty corner into points. It wouldn't be enough to complete the comeback however, as Scranton held on to advance to the championship game.

Karp led the Colonels with a goal, an assist, four shots and two on goal, with Gilroy making 10 saves in net.

Keys led Scranton with nine total shots and five on goal, scoring two. In goal, Maclean Thuermer made two saves.
