Wilkes Men's Volleyball Take Home Two Wins Following Tri-Match Victories Against Penn State Altoona and Saint Vincent College
ALTOONA, Pa. - The Wilkes men's volleyball team swept their tri-match on Saturday, pulling out 3-2 victories over both Penn State Altoona and Saint Vincent College.
Game 1 | Wilkes 3, Penn State Altoona 2
In the Colonels' first match of the day, they defeated the Lions in five sets, winning second, third and fifth sets by scores of 25-16, 25-19, and 15-12. The Lions took the first and fourth set by scores of 25-22 and 25-19.
Leading the team in kills was Jackson Shafer (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) with 22, followed by Lucas Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) with nine. Shafer also led in blocks along with Jacob Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) with three each, and James Brust (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) and Ryan McCorry (Tuckerton, NJ/Pinelands) recorded the team high in aces with three apiece. Brust also led in assists with 35 and digs with 12. Alex Derk (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) followed with 11 digs and Shafer tallied nine.
The Colonels outperformed the Lions in aces with nine compared to their four as well as in digs with 57 over their 55 and blocks with eight over their six.
Game 2 | Wilkes 3, Saint Vincent 2
The Colonels won every other set in their match against the Bearcats, winning the first set 29-27, the third set 25-21, and the fifth set 15-13. Saint Vincent took sets two and four by scores of 25-21 and 25-20.
Shafer led in kills with 25, along with Lucas Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) who recorded 11. Jacob Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) led in blocks with five, and Shafer and Lucas Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) each recorded three. McCorry tallied three aces and Joshua Conley (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks South) had the team high 32 assists. Brust followed with 17 assists and Derk led in digs with 10, followed by McCorry with eight.
The Colonels outperformed the Bearcats in aces with five compared to their three, as well as in assists with 54 over their 53. The two teams tied in kills and digs with 60 and 47 each, proving an even matchup.
Wilkes men's volleyball will be back at home for their next match on Friday, February 7, against Virginia Wesleyan. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m.
