BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Fresh off being named Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week,
Eli Becker's (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) 21-point performance led the Wilkes University men's basketball team to an 85-63 victory over Moravian University on Wednesday night at Johnston Hall.
The Colonels improve to 18-6 overall with a 12-5 record in Landmark Conference play, while the Greyhounds fall to 15-9 overall and 10-7 in conference play.
The Greyhounds took an early 11-4 lead on their home court, but a 9-1 Colonel run gave the visitors the 13-12 lead thanks to a tip in by
Jack Argento (Hershey, PA/Hershey). From there, the Wilkes offense went full-throttle and ran away with the lead, maxing out in the first half at a 23-point advantage with a 29-7 run to make the score 42-19. Becker and
Daniel Santaniello (Roaring Brook Twp., PA/Scranton Prep) led the team across the run with seven and six points respectively.
Over the final four minutes of the first half, Moravian chipped away at the Colonel lead, but the visitors took a 50-33 lead into the break.
The Colonels continued to dominate the second half, maintaining a cushion of over 20 points for a majority of the period. Up 79-52 with three minutes remaining, head coach
Izzi Metz began to empty the bench, and the Colonels finished with a comfortable 85-63 victory on the road. Becker led the team in the second half with nine points.
Becker was one of four Colonels in double-digit scoring, followed by
Lucas Lesko (Northampton, PA/Northampton) (17),
Colin Ackerman (Manasquan, NJ/Wall Township) (11), and
Cayden Merrifield (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) (10). Lesko led the team with eight rebounds and tied with Ackerman for a team-high five assists each. The Wilkes offense shot over 50% from the field, while holding the Greyhounds to 35% from the field.
