Wilkes Baseball Completes Comeback in Home Opener Against King's College
EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University baseball team scored three unanswered runs in the final three innings to complete the come from behind victory at Bruggeworth Field Wednesday night.
The Colonels pick up their first win of the season to move to 1-2 overall, while the Monarchs fall to 0-1.
King's opened the scoring with a two-run single in the third inning, but Wilkes responded in their half with four runs.
Zack Luksic (Shavertown, PA/Dallas) opened the scoring with a two-run double to deep left-center field.
Jimmy Brazofsky (Park Ridge, NJ/Park Ridge) brought Luksic home with a sacrifice bunt to give Wilkes the lead and
Gavin Lacoe (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) added a fourth with a bunt that saw
Jacob Cambria (Elysburg, PA/Southern Columbia) reach home safely.
The Monarchs scored again in the fourth on a sacrifice fly and took the lead back in the sixth with a bases-loaded single and a bases-loaded walk to make the score 5-4.
In the bottom of the seventh,
Chase Vrabel (Gibsonia, PA/Pine Richland) struck a pinch-hit double to put himself and pinch runner
Richie Rossi (Hazleton, PA/Hazleton Area) into scoring position.
Evan Melberger (West Pittston, PA/Wyoming Area) then walked to load the bases, and
Jack Mathis (Exeter PA/Wyoming Area) was hit by a pitch in the next at bat to tie the game once more.
Luksic was hit by a pitch to open the bottom of the eighth, and advanced to third on a Cambria single up the middle. Rossi then laid down a sacrifice bunt and Luksic beat the play at the plate to take a 6-5 lead, with Rossi reaching on the play. After a groundout moved Rossi and Cambria to second and third respectively, a balk by pitcher Dusty Shaver scored Cambria to give Wilkes the 7-5 advantage.
First year pitcher
AJ Levandoski (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) (1-0) finished off the game with a 1-2-3 top of the ninth to pick up his first collegiate win and give the Colonels their first win of the season. Levandoski pitched three innings allowing only one hit with three strikeouts to take the victory.
Cambria led the Colonels with three hits and two runs, while Luksic led the team with two RBIs.
Wilkes takes the diamond next in Fort Pierce, Fl. as they open their spring break trip against Alvernia University on Saturday, March 1. First pitch against the Golden Wolves is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
