Wilkes Men's Volleyball Split Saturday Tri-Match
WILKES-BARRE - The Wilkes men's volleyball team split their Saturday tri-match against Hilbert and SUNY Potsdam.
Game 1 | Wilkes 3, Hilbert 2
The Colonels defeated Hilbert in five sets for their first match of the day, with Wilkes winning sets 2, 4, and 5 by scores of 26-25, 25-18 and 15-9 and Hilbert taking sets one and three by scores of 25-18 and 27-25. Wilkes went on a seven point run at the end of the fifth set to secure the win.
Jackson Shafer (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) led the team in kills, recording 22 throughout the match, followed by Lucas Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) with 13 and Jacob Ruiz (Long Pond, PA/Pocono Mtn West) with 10. Joshua Conley (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks South) led in assists with 46 as well as in aces with four and digs with 12. Jacob Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) led in blocks with four while Lucas Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) tallied three and Aaron Ladd (Souderton, PA/Pennridge) had two. Shafer also recorded 11 digs and Alex Derk (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) had 10.
Wilkes outperformed Hilbert in kills, aces and assists, with 58 kills over their 45, 12 aces compared to their three, and 55 assists over their 42.
Game 2 | Wilkes 0, SUNY Potsdam 3
The Colonels fell to Potsdam in three sets for their second match of the day, with the Bears taking the three sets by scores of 25-20, 26-24 and 25-19.
Shafer led in kills with nine along with Lucas Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) with eight and Ruiz with seven. Shafer and Ruiz also both collected aces for the Colonels with Shafer recording two and Ruiz had one. Ladd led in blocks with five total and Shafer had three, while Conley led in assist with 26. Derk tallied the team high in digs with eight while Shafer had six and Ruiz recorded four.
Wilkes recorded 32 kills and 97 total attacks while outperforming Potsdam in blocks with seven compared to the Bears' three.
The Colonels will be on the road for their next match on Friday, March 14 as they travel to Newark to face Rutgers Newark in a 7 p.m. match.
