Wilkes Baseball Proves Dominant over TCNJ in 8-4 Victory
EWING, NJ - Three home runs and six different players recording runs for the Colonels helped guide the Wilkes baseball team to an 8-4 victory over The College of New Jersey on Tuesday afternoon.
Nathan Loch (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley) opened the scoring for the Colonels in the top of the first, recording the first run of the day off a throwing error by the TCNJ catcher after Loch was first walked and then stole second. Matthew Show (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) added the second run of the day, hitting a home run to begin the top of the third inning. Luke Spencer (Lehman, PA/Lake Lehman) followed suit, hitting a home run of his own later in the third inning to get the Colonels up 3-0.
The Lions got on the board in the bottom of the third inning, with two runs being scored off a single to left field, closing the gap in the score to 3-2. Show added the Colonel's fourth run of the day in the top of the fifth inning, scoring after Jack Mathis' (Exeter PA/Wyoming Area) hit that resulted in a fielding error by TCNJ. Spencer followed up with his second home run of the day, scoring Mathis as well to increase Wilkes' lead to 6-2.
A single up the middle in the bottom of the fifth scored two more runs for TCNJ to bring the score to 6-4. Jacob Cambria (Elysburg, PA/Southern Columbia) and Spencer added insurance runs for the Colonels in the sixth and seventh innings, with Cambria scoring on a passed ball and Spencer scoring off of Mike Show's (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) single up the middle after he had stolen second following a walk.
Riley Jagger (Hop Bottom, PA/Mountain View) picked up the win on the mound, pitching 2.1 innings and recording three strikeouts while allowing no runs, finishing the game with a 2.38 earned run average.
The Colonels will play at home this weekend, facing Elizabethtown for a weekend series beginning at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 15.
