Wilkes Baseball Drops Home Game Against No. 15 Penn State Harrisburg
EDWARDSVILLE, PA - The Wilkes baseball team fell to No. 15 ranked Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday night by a score of 10-6, snapping their four game win streak.
The Lions go on the board early, with a home run by Blaine Walti in the top of the first inning. Penn State added a second run in the top of the first when Carlos Iriza flew out to right field, allowing Brednan Henn to score the run for the Lions. The Colonels added a run of their own in the bottom of the first inning when Luke Spencer (Lehman, PA/Lake Lehman) flew out to right field, bringing Nathan Loch (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley) in for a run to get Wilkes on the board.
In the top of the second inning, Penn State added three more runs to their total, with Lucas Floyd recording a home run and Blaine and Adam Bova scoring off of a single to left field by Henn to bring the Lions to a total of five runs. A hit by Drew Sassaman in the top of the third inning brought Iriza home for the Lion's sixth run of the game. The Colonels recorded their second run of the game when Matt Show scored off a double by Loch in the bottom of the third. Loch scored a run of his own in the bottom of the third, recording a run while Jack Mathis (Exeter PA/Wyoming Area) was picked off at second base.
Devin Markert (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) scored the Colonel's fourth run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with Show reaching first on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded, bringing Markert home. Penn State added three more runs in the top of the sixth inning, with Sassaman scoring on a balk and Floyd scoring off a fielding error by Wilkes' second baseman. Henn added the Lion's ninth run off a single up the middle by Demetre Kout. Wilkes added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, with Evan Melberger (West Pittston, PA/Wyoming Area) scoring off a double down the right field line by Loch and Show scoring on a fly out to center field by Mathis. Penn State recorded their 10th run in the top of the eighth inning when Walti scored on a passed ball.
Loch ended the game with three hits, two doubles and two rbi's for the team high and Markert recorded eight putouts while Jacob Cambria (Elysburg, PA/Southern Columbia) had four.
The Colonels are on the road this weekend to face Drew in a three game series beginning at 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 22.
