Wilkes Baseball Completes Sunday Sweep of Waynesburg

FORT PIERCE, FL – The Wilkes University baseball team extended their win streak to four games Sunday afternoon in Fort Pierce, Florida, sweeping a doubleheader against Waynesburg University by scores of 3-2 and 7-3.

Wilkes improves to 4-2 on the year with the wins and 3-0 in the sunshine state, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 1-3 overall.

Jack Mathis (Exeter PA/Wyoming Area) started the day off with two RBIs, scoring Nathan Loch (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley) in the bottom of the first inning on a single to right field and then bringing home Chase Vrabel (Gibsonia, PA/Pine Richland) in the second inning with a single through the left side.

Waynesburg responded with two runs in the top of the third inning with a sacrifice fly and an advance on a run-down. Wilkes regained the lead as Zack Luksic (Shavertown, PA/Dallas) scored on a Vrabel single that saw him advance to second on a throwing error to make the score 3-2 Colonels.

The Colonel defense held the Yellow Jackets to four 1-2-3 innings the rest of the way to take the first contest 3-2. AJ Levandoski (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) (2-0) picked up his second win of the week allowing only two runs on four hits with six strikeouts. Caleb Graham (Exeter, PA/Wyoming Area) got the save allowing no hits with two strikeouts through two innings of work.
Loch and Vrabel led the team going 3-for-3 from the plate, with Mathis' two RBIs leading the team.

Game two began with a pitcher's duel, as Wilkes' Zachary Lloyd (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) and Waynesburg's Ethan Erhard traded shutout innings through the first four innings with electric pitching on both sides. In the top of the fifth inning, the Colonels broke the game wide open with seven runs.

With runners on first and third, Loch scored Gavin Lacoe (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) on a sacrifice bunt, reaching base as the Yellow Jackets failed to get Lacoe out at home. Mathis loaded the bases in the next at-bat with a bunt single, and Luke Spencer (Lehman, PA/Lake Lehman) doubled the lead on a sacrifice fly that scored Matt Show. Luksic loaded the bases again with a single, before Jacob Cambria (Elysburg, PA/Southern Columbia) made it a 3-0 game with a single through the left side. Vrabel was then hit by a pitch to make the score 4-0.

Devin Markert (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) then launched a double to deep right field that scored two more, before Lacoe reached the plate for the second time in the inning to deliver the dagger on a sacrifice fly that scored Vrabel and made the score 7-0.

Waynesburg showed life in the final inning, scoring three runs on a double to left, but Shaun O'Donnell (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) finished off the final batter to seal the sweep.

Lloyd (1-0) pitched six shutout innings allowing only four hits with seven strikeouts. Luksic led the team with two hits and Markert led the team with two RBIs.

The Colonels take to the diamond again on Tuesday, March 4 as they face off against Lebanon Valley College to continue their spring break trip. First pitch against the Dutchmen is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
